Guys,
I've decided to start afresh with my finances and get rid of my 2010 Seat Ibiza Cupra.
I'm currently looking at a 2009 2.0TDI Golf SE 140, I test drove it today and never realised how punchy the 140 is!
It's fairly basic looking compared to my previous cars, (2 Seat Leon FR's, 2 Seat Ibiza Cupra's and an Audi A3), 16" alloys, no foglights etc. I'll be changing the alloys right away with some replica Vancouver's so this is why I want to start from scratch modding it :)
So here goes,
1st question, RNS510, any coding required? It currently has the RCD310 I believe with the basic dashboard display, as it's an SE, it doesn't have steering wheel controls, will there be any issues?
2nd question, did the Golf (GTD, GTI or R) ever have smoked rear lights that aren't LED? I just don't have the money to pay dealer prices for the LED versions at the minute.
3rd question, I will be lowering it, probably just on springs for now, has anyone got any preferences? Eibach etc? I also read something about a screw in the front wheel arches?
4th question, is there any companies in the UK that do the Votex kits for a decent price? Mainly the front bumper spoiler and rear boot spoiler?
5th and final question, was there only one shade of black metallic paint? I may purchase GT bumpers off eBay, but need to be sure there was only one black.
I've had plenty of experience with VAG cars over the past few years so in return of you helping me, I'd love to help any of you out aswell :)
Thanks for your time guys.

Welcome DRC
I can answer one of your questions
2) My GTD has smoked non-LED rears
Somebody else will be along to help with the others....
-
Buck, call me Danny :P
Thanks for the quick reply! Does anyone or yourself have any idea how much these cost from the dealers? Or better off on ebay?
-
Hi Danny,
Welcome.
Quite a few of the guys and gals on here with older GTIs have swapped their smoked non LED rears (sounds awful!) for smoked LED rears (sounds even worse!) and might want to off load the former. I would mine at a very low price, but they will be going on my nephew's Golf Match if it ever arrives.
I am sure someone would read this and you'd get lucky.
The price of these new from VW is shocking, same as the LED rears.
All the best with your searches.
Asker
PS: Buck is really Adrian!

Welcome Danny,
I think I can work out who you are on cupranet! (I've got a different user name on there too, used to have the same one on here but the site used to crash out quite often years ago so re-regisered on here with a different handle due to changes of email address and forgotten passwords etc)
I'll answer what I can (but offer no cast iron guarantees that I'm correct!)
1] If you have the small in dash computer display thingy then you shouldn't need any coding. If you have the MF Steering-wheel and big display you will need VCDS coding to 'BAP Enabled' which will give you the steering wheel control function and direction indicators etc. However if you don't have either of those options then the unit will work fine showing only the selections and map on the RNSs screen. No big loss really.
2]The GTI, GTD and GT all used to come with slightly darkened non LED rear lights. You'd need to be an anorak to notice much difference between the two styles though. Unless they were very cheap I wouldn't bother personally. Can of tint spray would to a better job! LEDs expensive but worth it, however as the car you are looking at is a 2009 it will probably end up with a bulb out warning light like mine does.
3] I've not lowered mine, probably won't bother either as I don't think the GTI sits that high unlike the Polo (and Ibiza). However if I were young again and in your shoes I reckon I'd go with an Eibach spring kit as they are the only ones that specifically state they will work well with standard shocks, so I'm guessing they will ride the most comfortable too. I think VW Racing springs are okay to use with standard shocks too, so it would come down to £££
4] Not seen any. You could possibly pick up a second hand GTI/GTD rear spoiler from a scrapper if you were lucky and the ebay morons didn't go too silly on bidding. Other than that all I can suggest is to phone your local TPS outlet and try and blag a 'trade' discount.
5] So far as I've seen there is only one met black and one flat black shade, however it is not unusual for VW to differ the shades slightly between model years. I'm guessing you really mean GTI/GTD bumpers as the GT just has normal bumpers? Once you've upgraded your wheels the standard non GTI/GTD bumpers actually look fine, just get the foglight grilles from a GT.
And now my turn for some questions: Why are you getting shot of your nice (White?) Beezer Cupra? Why have you dis-counted a Leon 140 tdi? A lot more spec for your £££.
The 140 CR TDI goes well enough (I looked into getting an Ibiza FR SC TDI when they first did the VAT free offers last year. It went well enough (but the TDI engine wasn't anywhere near sound deadened as much as it is in the Leon and Golf), but you won't have anywhere near the same performance as your Cupra if you like to make use of the full rev-range. The CR will close the gap with a re-map though
-
Asker, thanks for your reply :) haha, I'm new! Sorry Adrian :P
Exonian, thank you very much for your replies. Yes, I guess you could tell who I was from the amount of car changes I've done? haha.
That's good about the RNS510, as I don't have VAG-COM yet, so it should slot straight in, just need to put the GPS antenna somewhere.
The back lights, if I can't find them cheap, I could try Lamin-x? See how that looks?
Yeah, my mum has just got a GTI and it sits fine, just the SE doesn't really :) But Eibach is what I was thinking.
The front bumper, I thought about the GTI/GTD bumper, but the normal GT bumper has foglight surrounds and a chrome strip around the bottom of it compared to the SE, so I'm assuming it'll cost nearly the same to get the parts from VW as it would for a new bumper from ebay?
The reason the Cupra is going is because of the amount of fuel it uses with the miles I do, I'm putting over £50 a week in it. Things rattle inside, the brakes make horrible grinding noises and am not a fan of the DSG tbh. The Leon is a better specced car, but I fancy a change, I fancy a new challenge, I test drove the Ibiza FR TDI and wasn't impressed, I guess I just prefer bigger cars? I'll be getting the Golf remapped so it'll be quicker then the Cupra. I never use the full rev range as it just swallows the fuel :(
With the Golf, I fancy making it mine, putting my own stamp on it, so for going for a basicish model, I can do what I like with it :)
-
Danny,
Love your enthusiasm. Your car will be unique. Such a good feeling.
Stick some fogs or LED DRLs (I am still not an LED fan) on the front bumper and that should 'tart' it nicely.
I'll have a chat with my nephew and try and convince him against the smoked rears. They do look better than the standard ones but only nerds like us will notice.
Your labour of love will keep you enjoyably busy. Mine turned out to be a highly appropriate nine month stint! Most of mine was cosmetic. I've nearly stopped now, I think.

Exactly :) The only car I eve modded was my 08 Leon FR, gave it the stealth look, black on black :)
But that's been it and I think that's why I get bored of my cars so quickly.
But yes, OEM foglights (even if they don't get wired up) will be better then some tacky LED strips off ebay :) or I could go for the R bumper, hmmm....
Okay mate, well let me know, the salesman is getting back to me today regarding the finance, knowing my look it'll be declined :( haha
Your car sounds rather nice, did you do a progress thread on it at all?

Not really a progress thread but so many others, hence my outrageous post count. Doc cannot find the right cure for me.
I'll change my signature for a short time now, so you can view the variety of my cosmetic makeover. Some of the guys in the other sections go potty about my luggage net so I've highlighted it for their well-being.
BTW: I hope you get the finance. I love walking into shops badly dressed sometimes, then buying a very expensive item with 'loads of money'. Love the look on their faces and the change in attitude. Pathetic.

Ive ran SEATs for years too and use to be on seatcupra.net too.
I'll try and answer these as my mate has a TDI 105SE and i park next to his at work everyday.
1: mates SE has the bigger display and displays the info so im guessing it will need coding.
2: GTI & GTD have the smoked lights and imo when you see them side by site theres a HUGE difference. The standard ones are very very red/orange looking.
3: I will leave this to others to answer.
4: Not seen any apart from places on ebay.
5: One shade of metallic black but there is also a solid black.

Bloody hell! That is a list, are the majority retro-fitted? I bet your car is verrrry nice :P
Well, still no word from the garage so I'll call them up shortly :)
I've had a quote from a wheel place in NI of £585 for replica Vancouvers with tyres and postage, a couple of guys used them from seatcupra.net so they are reputable :)
The SE I test drove yesterday only had the smaller display, for fuel consumption etc, there wasn't any of the convenience menus like on my mums GTI :(
First mods are, the Vancouvers with some spacers I think, anyone got pictures with spacers on theres?
Rear window tints at OEM, maybe a little darker and GT front bumper :)
I hope I get it, cheaper insurance then my Cupra and with Carlise finance, no payments for 3 months :D

Hi,
Not trying to be a smart Alec; but as you want it lower, darker rear lights, the chrome trim on front grille and the fogs; could you not find an '09 GT 140 for similar money? That would come with all of those plus the multi-function steering wheel, and the sports seats too. Worth a thought?

No worries mate, for some reason, the GT shoots up alot on my insurance and the GT's are priced a fair bit higher then they're asking for this SE. I'm only 20 you see, so until am 21 am paying stupid premiums for the Cupra and a GT if I got one.

If you carry out the lowering and changing of your lights your insurance will go up anyway.

Admiral only charged me an extra £50 for the mods I did to my Leon when I had, and the insurance for the SE is about £500 cheaper so there is a fair difference.

Fair point,

Ah; OK. This has just made me so glad I;m getting on a bit; as if there's 500 difference; i hate to think what the overall premium costs!
Have fun with it, and making ot your own.

Yeah, a bit of a retro feast!
Only ACC, 18†Shadows, F/R Park Sensors, Lux/Winter Packs as factory options. The rest retro! Crazy. This forum has drained me.
-
I'll probably be getting eibach sportlines for mine, they give a nice drop and handle very well, they did on my other car anyway.
My mate at work has sportlines on his mk5 GT and rates them very highly.
-
The premium for the SE is £700 so for the GT do the maths :( can't wait til am 21!
The finance so far has been declined, possibly due to all the cars I've had, its crazy as this Golf is actually less a month! But we will keep trying :) I've got some really good mods to do, I just want to have the Golf, £50 a week in fuel is killing me!
-
^^^^ Oh how I would love a £50 a week fuel bill
Trying filling up 3-4 times a week

My daily commute is 158 mile round trip, so at 320 miles to a tank I see the man at the Shell petrol stations every two days.

Bloody hell guys! I thought I had it bad! Every 2 days is ridiculous!
Used to get 2 weeks on a full tank out of my Leon FR Derv :( Oh how I miss that car!

I am so unlucky. Use my Freedom pass nowadays as I can't drive the car as I have just one functioning arm.  Soon be corrected, I hope.
Hope you get the finances sorted. It will happen, but just takes a bit of time and a few disappointments. Have you checked your credit rating? There is always something very simple that can make them not provide finance. Just a thought. However, I am sure you will find a way.
-
I think the main thing is there abit of negative equity :( but with me saving for a house, I don't have the funds to pay it off, but as I said, the Golf is a good £50 less a month? :S He said the 2 he tried today declined, doubt am gonna have much luck?
-
Sounds rough mate. How did you end up with negative equity on a 2010 car? You don't have to answer as i know it's a cheeky question! :undecided:
-
It's okay Jimble :) tbh mate the cupra has depreciated quicker then dropping a stone of a cliff! The garage I bought it off seems to have stuffed up somehow :( getting me frustrated.
-
Well, like I said, it has been declined. No other options as any spare cash i tied up in my house savings :( oh well :(
-

I know this is not good advice, but how about prostitution? It's all in a good cause.
Or, rob someone close to you. They won't report you to the police. You'll get a rap on the knuckles and will have the Golf anyway.
NO. NO. Please don't listen to me. I beg you. I am a bad person.
PS: You are 20 and seem very serious. Can't the house wait a bit. You'll have much more fun with a car.
-
Haha!
But on a serious note, yes the car would be my first choice, but then me and the girl want somewhere to call our own :) I've had fun over the past 3 years with the cars I've had, I just thought I'd go for something a little more sensible and get rid of some of my credit and I still can't have it. No fair :(
-
Well.....as mum as they're annoying, but we all love them, my mum had possibly decided to put the money needed in :) I won't have to make a payment for 3 months with Carlise finance so I can pretty much pay her back in that time, the Golf has still been taken off sale, so hopefully the talks go well tonight then I should be the proud owner of an ECONOMICAL car haha. Mods may be delayed for a while until I get my finances sorted but they WILL happen :D
-
Great news, Danny.
There's no friend like a mother, in calm and stormy weather.
-
I know, god bless her haha, the main reason is I've got like an 800 mile round trip to Devon in March, god knows how much fuel the Ibiza would use
-
Well, looks like I'll be picking the Golf up next week, sign the docs this Friday :) pretty happy to be honest, means I can finally have a car and adapt it to how I want.
I'll get some pictures posted when I can, main thing needs doing is OEM shade rear tints, or may go abit darker and fitting my HIDS too :) Now I don't want to start a whole arguement with HIDS, people love them, people hate them, but with my previous cars, they help alot with the roads I drive on and the are H7R at 5k so they aren't as blinding as people with H7 6ks, and when I save up enough, I will go for the OEM Bi-Xenons and also could do with VAG-COM, anyone know a cheap one anywhere?
-
Have a butchers in the VAG-COM section of the site, there is a list of people in there with VAG-COM and what they can do with it, also with locations.
