from looking at the turbo it seems like it was starved of oil that is why it went pop.
is there away of checking oil is getting pumped around OK? as i dont wanna put this new turbo on.
-
check the oil pickup pipe in the sump if its blocked then you need to unblock it if the damage aint already done the pickup pipe gettin blocked cost me a new engine it was on a 400 mile treck so didnt really know till it was to late hope this helps you
-
As above, check your oil pick up pipe
-
i think i'am starting to hear my turbo going sounds like it is metal on metal will check this tomorrow is it just pulling out the pipe from the sump to see if it is blocked not taking all of the pipe out from the turbo as it looks abit cramped and hard to get too
-
If you are worried about pipes being blocked replace them don't chance the charger and always replace them if you change the turbo :afro:
-
is the oil feed ok? As per what Neil said, spend a bit of time and money making sure the oil flow is healthy, it will be cheaper in the long run
-
oil pickup was blocked :( all fine now. thank god i checked it.
-
hi maxxih was it the in feed oil pipe i have checked the return feed pipe that goes to the sump and that was ok and if it was the infeed what it easy to get at from the top of the bonnet

Just out of interest what oil were you using and how often did you change it?
-
sump off job to get at the pick up isnt it?..
-
i was using 5-30. I used Engine flush 3 months ago. I think all the crap went into the sump and when i put new oil in, it sucked all that crap up :( and got stuck in the turbo lines.
I cleaned them all out they where full of rubbish.
Will never use engine flush again!

yes

was there any squelling sounds from the turbo before it went i.e when you applied boost that is what i'am getting
-
that's damn expensive engine flush
-
just been looking at etka, there doesnt seem to be a sump gasket only sealant... what sealant did you use?.
-
just got it from VW £14
I think it is just normal sealant.

Yeah all the build up from the engine must have been stripped off and blocked the pick up
I will add NOT to use engine flush to the service thread
-
isnt it ok to use, if you pour some fresh oil through after to flush whats left of the sh!t out ?
-
i personally dont recommend engine flush it does more harm than good in my eyes..
-
Never been keen on engine flush
-
its ok on new cars but as they get older they rely more on the crap in the engine you flush it out you run into problems..
-
if you do use a engine flush then it is always recommended to remove the sump and give it a full clean and remove sludge before putting new oil back in the car. If serviced regular then these porblems would be less likely to happen
-
Big killer the oil pick up pipe, not too bad on the Mk4s, but the Passats are worse poor old Bens 1.8T Passat is rattling its tw@t off due to the pick up.

yea is a shame. i changed the oil every 5k cuz i rag the sh!t out of it.
soon as i put the engine flush in, good bye turbo. lame.
-
most the gunk settles to the sump anyway, all engine flush does is loosen it up.
sump off and clean it, works better.
if you were changing it every 5k then engine flush wasnt needed really, if its good oil, actually a bit surprised there was enough gunk in there if you were servicing it so regular

just been out to buy some quantum 5w30 from tps, got a filter and sump plug all for about £33 quid.. halfords wanted £36 just for theyre own branded stuff thats without the filter and plug..
thought i had best get this done as i am almost sure i used semi-synth last time i serviced.
im going to take the sump off too and give the pick up a clean, i am very paranoid now...lol
