ok driving my valver quite hard the other day. (maybe revved it up to the red ) and i felt something go on it. now it wont idle and is just revving on its own - same as a problem i had about 6mths ago. There is also a strong smell of oil which wasnt there before :undecided: I have checked all the usual
1. vacuum/oil breather pipes
2. ecu/fuel pump relays
3. i have a new crank sensor/temp sensor in and had a full service done around a month ago.
any ideas?? also i cannot re-set my mfa readings and it will no longer let me connect to VAGCOM (only ecu)
is my ECU knackered?
-
Why would you say ECU? It's the LAST thing I'd expect to fail.
Have you checked the ISV? Maybe you somehow managed to break that? Try cleaning the throttle body and all the engine earths. Start with the cheap/free stuff
-
I doubt your ecu has failed.

+1 - i would look in the maintenance thread and go from that
-
ok guys - this is a problem i thought i sorted. i have changed everything in the last 6 months. i have redone all the earths including wires star/split washers etc. they are now far superior to what the car came with!!!
isv i have put a new one in. and have cleaned this week just out of cause.
TB cleaned and new gaskets installed.
throttle position sensor wiring re done.
new lambda probe
new crank sensor
new ecu relay
new fuel pump relay
new coil
new rotor arm/dizzy
all breather pipes renewed.
I have exhausted just about every option. and have been through the maintenance section with a fine toothcombe!!!
the reason i think it is the ecu now is it will no longer connect with vagcom. mfa setting are stuck and wont re-set - this is even after trying to reset the ecu.
any suggestions of anything ive not tried welcome?? chances are i have already tried even if not mentioned above!!!!
cheers

is it smoking at all ? maybe you've damaged an internal part i.e valves, stem seals or maybe skipped a tooth on the timing belt?
i know its a different car but once i bent one of the cam shafts on my renault 19 16v due to giving it to many beans in the end it snapped the pully off and the crank side ablitterated! wish i had a picture of it most people wouldn't believe it.
-
no smoke - internals all look good. oil/coolant clean. will try and check the timing at the weekend though!!
-
Does the idle stabilize if you put the inside heaters on max speed?
-
Khare no i tried that - i saw one of your previous threads. i have recently changed my coolant temp sensor so don't think that's the problem??..........unless your were thinking of something else???
-
Does it still smell of oil.

Ahh right, well on mine it turned out to be a loose gearbox earth! When I changed the temp sensor it must have knocked the earth and left it fine for a few days.
You've done all your earths though so I'd rule them out
Did you say you were not able to get on vagcom? Hmmm, it could be ECU, you have pretty much changed all the basic stuff.
I have a spare 16v ECU at home, I'm in Lymington but I go to Bournemouth every few days and on the weekends. You're welcome to try that and see if it cures it
-
wayne - yeah after driving it does still smell of oil - although it dosnt seem to be leaking or losing any oil?????
Also when im driving and take my foot of the power it jolts like i've slammed the anchors on!! also jolts forward when we i put my foot back on the gas. - could a dodgy fuel pump do this?
Khare - may have to try that, however going to try a few more things first this week end. i'll pm you if i have now joy.
have you also got vagcom - may have better luck connecting it to someone elses??
-
Yeah I've got vagcom which works just fine

ok guys sorry to bump this up again but i have only just managed to have another look at my car.
checked all my breather pipes they are all ok with no splits - (i assumed this would be the case as i have replaced them all recently)
As i can smell oil - i thought i'd check the level and to my shock and horror  i found the the yellow plastic bit my dipstick sits in has snapped clean in half at the point it joins on the the metal tube!!!!!!!
Now this will need sorting anyway - and i am sure this is why i can smell oil - but would this cause the bad idle on my car???????
Has anybody had anything similar before??
-
It can effect the idle. it's a closed breather system and any leaks can cause bad running (even from the dip stick holder, plus it can make fumes enter the engine compartment hence the oil smell)
-
thanks mate thats what i thought!!!!!
Will try and find where i can get a new one from (probably my local scrappy) - see what happens and will keep everything crossed that this solves the problem!!

Get a new one from VW, they are not expensive
