Hello all!
Little advice needed.
I previously have had a mk3 golf and I adored it! however it soon dawned on me the one I had bought was a rolling heap of Sh!te.
Went away from VW and now have a MG (Flame all you will) Well this is about to die and im looknig for another car and have stumbled upon a MK4 2.0 GTI. I need to know if there are any common things to look for on them or any questions etc.
Thanks guys!
Tom

Just be aware that the Mk4 2.0 Gti isn't much of a Gti. Got for a 1.8t Gti and it'll have a bit more of a zing in it's tail.
-
2.0l drink oil and is very underpowered for a heavy car.
Go for TDI or 1.8t.
-
I wouldn't go for a 2.0. I'd choose a 1.6S 16V MK4 over one. No questions.
-
Problem with the 1.6 is it doesn't come with the spec of a GTI/GTTDI model.
-
personally id pick up a 1.8T gti, or TDI if you drive alot of miles...... i walk to work and rarely drive atall and my 1.8T guzzles lol
the new TSI's are impressive if you rob a bank....
-
avoid the 2.0..............tdi or 1.8t all the way
-
theres not goin to be a lot of difference in fuel economy from the 2.0 to the 1.8t so go down this root get the 2.0 and you will be gutted in a few weeks most ppl usually are
-
Buy the 2.0. We like a good laugh on here
In all seriousness though, avoid it like the plague. A 1.9TDI in GT format or the 1.8T are the ones to go for.
If you're sensible though you'll go one better and get an Audi

no no no no no.. 2.0l 8v as said previously some drink oil some dont but when they do they do it fast.. me personally i had a 1.8t and now a 1.9tdi and i love them both equally yer the 1.9tdi is better for me commuting everyday but the 1.8t is a much more fun engine with more tuning potential.. get what you fancy mate.. dont forget the 4motion as well thats to some people's tastes..

Yes don't buy it, 2.0 is a poor choice, 1.8 even non turbo is a much better bet.
-
Oh yer sorry as Wayne said the 1.8 20v non turbo is a good choice and a reliable engine with not bad power..
-
+1 on the n/a.
have one as i couldnt afford a 1.8t.
was the same to insure as a 2.0.
about the same price to buy.
same mpg pretty much.
same tax.
15 bhp ish more. doesent seem much but every little helps and ide certainly have it over the 2.slow anyday. also it doesent drink oil like the 2.0.
if your determend for the 2.0 though, usual stuff with the golfs are,
rear windscreen washer leaking
the water from the washer breaking the boot lock and seising it up/breaking the solenoid valve.
rear windscreen de-mister.
thats all i can think of off the top of my head
engine wise, same as most cars really so give it a good looking over, have a good look at the service history, give it a little test drive (both at normal driving and then give it a quick ragging) and have a look at the over all body work, see if all pannels line up ect as this can give you a idea if its been in a crash as im sure you know.

just get a 4motion
and be skint
