Title: 84+ Deg C in Mk3 GTI 8v too high?
Post by: mynameisharry on 03 February 2011, 14:09
My Mk3 Gti keeps on cutting out, usually when doing some speeds (for example about 2 hours ago while doing 70+ mph on the A303).
Weirdly, when you leave the engine off for 10ish minutes, it then goes for another 5ish minutes. It seems like its something to do with a temperature, but the engine temp displayed is dead centre, so normal, its only the oil temp that seems high...

Whats annoying is that when I'm just driving round town, it behaves fine, just on longer trips it does this cutting out thing!

Anyone got any ideas what it could be?

thats actually a little under normal operating oil temp, usually you see it get to 90degrees+ on a run, but each car/sensor reads a little different.

what engine code is it?

hmm, ok. Well, it was still running at 84, and was higher before I checked what it was...

How would I find out the engine code?

its on the sticker on the timing belt cover, or the sticker in the boot, or sticker in the inside of the service book,. its also on the engine if you can read it, at the top of the block between cylinders 3&4, just above the oil filter/block breather.

it'll be 2e, ady or agg

tells me it has a crank sensor, and i would say this is the cause of your problem :)

might possibly be the coil as they're a common fail too, but it sounds more liek a faulty crank sensor to me
