Title: 280mm brake conversion confusion

First off, sorry for posting something that's appeared in search results over and over, but the more I read the more confused I'm getting...  :embarassed:

Would the following list be all that's required to convert an '87 8v to a 280mm brake setup?

• Mk3 280mm calipers (Lucas or Girling, does it matter?  Found a Lucas pair from a 1994 16v)
• G60 discs, pads and carriers (from here (http://www.vwspares.co.uk/g2brakes.php))
• Mk2 16v hub (including the 'hub carrier' bits, not just the hub like on eBay here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CADDY-CORRADO-GOLF-MK2-MK3-FRONT-WHEEL-HUB-NEW-NO-ABS-/120428799777?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c0a1da721), right?)
• 19mm ball joints to fit the above hub
• 22.2mm master cylinder

Any help would be truly ace.   :nerd:

i think you need the larger 'G60' carrier, rather than the 16v one. could be wrong, best wait for an expert.... what rims are you putting on, as some 15's have trouble with the G60 calipers?

yeah you need 280mm carriers too, either g60 or mk3 gti pre-96, or various SEAT, Passat etc

Yeah, the carriers are on the vwspares page (http://www.vwspares.co.uk/g2brakes.php) (BDA215) - think I added to the confusion by mentioning 16v hub carriers!

Rims will be 15" BBS RS for summer and 'G60' 15" steels in winter (have heard they're actually Passat steels, though) so I'm hoping they're both a common enough setup that I'll be able to get away with it :undecided:

G60 callipers won't allow you to use BBS RA's

I have hybrid front brakes that use 16v callipers and pads and mk3 carriers and 280mm discs

i wanted to keep RA's

Bummer.  Maybe I'll have to settle for 256mm 16v jobbies instead, and hope they'll be up to the task.

Getting an ABF conversion and want to do it properly, even though I drive like a bit of a grandad I still don't want to end up in a hedge the first time I need the brakes to do their job.

I think with BBS RS you should be ok. I wanted to stay OEM with my wheels - 16v callipers - 280mm carriers and 16v pads work great

you will need to gring the slide pins (15mm hex area) back by about 3mm.

a fiddle but worth it
