Title: Clutch dead... or is it?
Post by: devolute on 03 February 2011, 01:11
Hi guys, Got a 1.8SE here, 92k.

When i've got my foot down in 4th, 5th, and I reach 22k, I often find the revs suddenly jump right up, shooting past 30 noisily and the amount of pull drops. Before then the car pulls okay-ish, but not always as strongly as it use to. Also, sometimes (but only sometimes), when I have a passenger and I'm going up a hill in 2nd, it'll rev up and the pull will disappear (although not so much that the car starts going backwards!). I live in hilly Sheffield so this is unfortunate.

There is also a bit less smoothness to the drive and I think it's got louder. The engine idles fine and I can put everything in gear okay (none of this popping out whilst reversing or any of that).

I'm just checking really, is this a dead clutch issue?

If it is, how much do you think I should expect to pay for a new one (reconditioned?)?

Thanks all,

I don't know if yours has a self adjusting cable or hydraulic operated clutch but anyway it sounds like your clutch is slipping.
Either it's out of adjustment or the clutch itself is badly worn and needs replacing, i'd suspect the latter..some of the guys here will give you more info i'm sure.

Thanks Christo77. I even considered exhaust problems, but it's just nice to get some idea of what's happening before I brave the garage.

It'll be a cable operated clutch and like mentioned, the clutch sounds shot to me.

Clutch slipping however might be worth checking the cable 1st.

No worries, and the guys here have probably confirmed the situation for you, yes brave the garage but first do some searches on here and investigate a bit more before you go ahead..that way you'll know better what you need and what to expect price wise, as well as what not to accept price wise!
I've never had to do a clutch on any of my cars so i'm a bit in the dark on that one.
