ok since my car cut out last week and had to get recovery truck home i have put new coil on and all seems ok.
but if the car is left over night or for the day when i go to start it when i first turn the key it clicks and its almost as if the starter motor starts then stops a few times then it turns over fine.
its not just a click i feel the donk as it tries to turn the engine but the engine dont turn but then it does and all is ok.
any ideas?

Sounds like a duff battery to me
-
Ignition switch?
-
Battery voltage dropping, might be time for a new one.
-
I had the same problem, not the noise though, just the lazy starter motor.
Stuck a new one on ,well used, and it sorted it out.
-
Sounds like a sticking solenoid. Starter may just pack up soon.
-
Oh great. How easy job to change?
-
dead easy, 3 bolts hold starter to the car :)
put a jack under the engine, undo the top bolt/nut holding the bracket to the front engien mount. jack engine till it lifts off the mount, then undo all the nuts & bolts holding the starter and wiring to to the car, then swap it over :)

disconnect battery neg cable first! - starter is always live...!

Ok great cheers may look for used one does it have to be for an 8v gti or are all mk3 golf starter motors the same?
-
Have you checked the battery yet? It may show 12v but that doesn't mean it's got the amps still to kick the starter.
-
1.8-2.0 8v all the same, 16v/vr6 different :)
-
What I will do is take battery off at weekend and charge it and see what happens.
-
Yup, get it fully charged. If it then starts fine, leave it over night and see what happens. If it doesn't start then the battery is goosed.
Will it start OK if you jump lead it?
-
The car always starts fine its just that when left for a few hours when I start it the starter motor seems to click a few times then it starts. But it always start after a few clicks.
-
mmm maybe the brushes on the starter are on their way out.
-
could be the ground cable, but more likely to be the solanoid I'd say. Start with a fully charged battery, then check the condition of the large red & black cables, then ponder about a new starter motor. You can test the ignition switch feed using a multimeter on the "trigger" cable to the solanoid.

Not sure if its anything to do with it but it only started since my coil died and I put new one on.
But when the coil died I was sat at side of road trying to start engine over and over maybe did something to starter.
Bloody cars why is it everytime u replace something it makes something els need replacing.
