Title: Boot Popper
Post by: Gash on 02 February 2011, 11:58
Right guys im looking at doing a bit of smoothing to the boot.
mainly delocking it, because the boot i have on isnt the original one and thus doesnt work with my key.
what i want to know is, iv bought a US Spec truck release button which i was going to use to open the boot.

would it be better to get a us boot actuator to connect the button and the boot together thus allowing me to unlock it that way. or shall i just get a boot popper kit and use that? :)

I would use a boot popper kit, ebay ones are cheap, just run it off the switch.

Still thinking how to do mine and am leaning towards fitting a Passat boot opener.

I used an old actuator from an Escort. Think it was from the central locking. Just needed that, a bit of wire, a button, and a piece of metal strip to hold the actuator in place. Then used an electrical joining block to attach the actuator to the existing rod (well, one that I made after snapping the end off the original trying to get the block on.) Hardest part was running the wire from the boot to the front of the car :)

This is something i plan on doing as well as soon as the weather improves, i brought a US spec centre console a few months ago that has a boot opening switch built in and it'd be rude not to utilise it fully.
What would be the best way to wire it up, where should i take a live feed from?

May as well take it from the central locking pump as its pretty close.

Will not work as you need something to pull the release lever up.

Did you get the mounting bracket and leather handbrake gaiter with your US spec console? Im having a bloody nightmare trying to track the parts down. Ive found a US spec parts catalogue but it doesn't list all the associated parts for some strange reason.
Any one got any ideas where i might be able to source them or at least establish what the part numbers actually are?

oem switch is just on/off switch, same as what you would get in an aftermarket kit. put live feed to oem switch, output wire to popper, then earth the other popper wire. done.
