Title: EBC Brakes - same price! whats the difference??
Post by: Ages84 on 02 February 2011, 10:43
hi guys,

just been looking at my front brakes and want to upgrade them!
i have 280mm disks on the fron and want to upgrade to EBC brakes.

they do turbo grooved and drilled discs and ultimax discs both for the same price but what is the difference?

anyone know?

Thanks

Andy

stick with plain vented for best performance, ie no drilled or grooved designs

Drilled discs tend to crack, better to stick with plain standard discs.

im surprised!

i would have expected you to reply with the grooved discs as being the best, but do plain discs really brake better than the grooved discs??

Thanks

Upgrading the pad material is the most cost effective way, especially as you're only replacing what you currently have

Plain discs are fine for road use.  If you were tracking it, then going for a big brake kit would be the better way to go

grooved discs constantly scrape the surface of your pad, this is to stop glazing which isn't really a problem on the road, only the track.

Drilled allow the disc to cool down quicker but again you won't see any benefit on the road really. Also like Wayne says they tend to crack easily

I had black diamond disks on an old bora with 280mm discs. Wish i had never bothered after about 5000 miles of use had to get them machined as they were that badly warped!. They were drilled and grooved so supposedly they should never have got that hot to warp, never even drove it that hard. The green stuff pads weren't much better either, never could stop them squeaking.
Plain disks and good quality pad like mintex and upgrade to steel hoses and you will be sorted.

do pads glaze? drilled discs dont cool down any quicker than solid discs, there purely for weight saving, its even mentioned in one of the guides on here. they did have a benefit of expelling brake dust but if you get a good pad compund then this isnt a worry

Drilled Discs:

A common misconception is that the purpose of drilled discs is to promote cooling. This couldn't be further from the truth, The real purpose is to reduce weight.

Drilling can allow brake dust and gases to escape, but with modern brake pads, this usually isn't a problem. Choosing a drilled disc for that purpose doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Many high performance cars like Porsche and Mercedes AMG come with drilled discs from the factory. For these cars, the drilling is mainly about the looks, just like bright red calipers. When people do serious high-performance driving on a trackdays, they usually swap to regular plain discs.

Drilled discs generally wear out brake pads faster and produce much more brake dust as a result.

Drilled discs have a shorter service-life than plain discs and tend to develop stress fissures/cracks over their lifetime

My brother had ebay drilled and grooved with yellow stuff pads on his E30 325, and it could litterally stop from ~130 inbetween the 300--200 marks coming up to roundabouts, and i mean dead stop, you just need the tyres to hold grip otherwise they just lock up. And they still on it now after it's been sat there for 3 years  (they were being used for like 6 months)

Are you using them with standard discs? How do they perform compared to standard pads?

Best brakes ive used which arnt 'Proper Brakes' is the 312mm SETUP from the Leons/ Probs anni golfs? TT's etc... I ran this setup with standard discs and pads on my old Ibiza (mapped diesel)... apsolutely immense braking power (i will upgrade the golf to this when the discs go) Its worth every penny.

You could late brake all day long and still stop before all the other cars. 130 - 0 was stupidly quick for a standard brake setup.

Just my 2 pence :)

(IMHO the standard brakes on the golf GTI are poo as the cars to heavy... but they do the job i guess), better than my corrados lol!

if your looking at ebc then go with red stuff pads, or if your willing to spend a bit more then go with Ferodo DS2500.

been researching myself as im gonna be upgrading my brakes soon, just struggling to find the caliper carriers to upgrade to 312mm

well after all the advice which has been floating around on this topic,
i have just purchased front and back red stuff pads and Goodridge Hoses and all came to £189 including postage :)
from Ruderacing which i have found to be the cheapest on the net.

might have to flush the system with silicone fluid if my overdraft will let me  :undecided:

thanks guys :)

silicone fluid? just stick with dot 4, do NOT use dot 5.

there is dot 5.1, but its not a great day to day fluid to use, makes the pedal very responsive but theres no feel to the pedal, might as well just be an on/off switch. it in no way improves the braking, just the response to the pedal

I've got green stuff pads on my golf and have been really impressed, miles better than standard pads(had mintex pads on my 1st subaru and they glazed up after 3 months)

EBC are sh!te, uprate to a mintex kit, get some slightly uprated brakefluid and a goodridge front and back hose kit (this is how the gti should of been out the factory)
