As title.
The last three days, the first 3 or 4 change into second have been almost impossible. Feels like there is no gear there :undecided:
Only happened after I changed the old oil (god knows how long it had been in there) for some new Castrol EP80w gear oil.
As I said, the changes into second and first but AFTER initial pullaway are very hard for the first 3 or 4 gearchanges, after that it's all great!
Any ideas?

Well the new oil is thicker and will take a little longer to warm up and thin out but it could be a sign of wear in the box that the thinner oil was masking.

Possibly mate, well pointed out
Going to recheck the level tomorrow after a nice long drive (will let it settle ofcourse), and do some gear linkage adjustments and see how it goes.
Hopefully no new box anytime soon otherwise I'll be forced to buy quaiffe diff and straight cut gears

Yep, check the linkag is spot on and go from there.

I hate setting up gear linkage :(
I'm running an A3 gear linkage on the VR, is there specific way they should be setup apart from playing with them until their right? :undecided:

worth checking the gearbox engine mount too.

But it's not been touched.
It's fine though

The problem with setting up the gearchange cables is they stretch over time.
All vw gearboxes seem to be the same with the 1st to 2nd gearchange.
I used to hold the clutch in for a bit longer and go gentle on the gearchange until the box warmed up.
-
1st and 2nd n for them to be hard to engage, I know that. What worries me is that it was fine until the oil change.
However I do need to align it, from neutral to third it's slight off centre, rather than straight up.
-
might be worth getting some redline mt90, sposed to be the dogs danglies for the 02a. no vag box should crunch into 2nd, but eventually the 2nd syncro gets buggered by all the boy racers who ragged em off the line
-
I had an issue with 2nd gear crunch and whining in 3rd. I cant quite remember the exact stuff I put in, but it was definately castrol fully synthetic. I just looked it up and it was sms-x. Anyhow, it made absolutely no difference.

Yeah I heard it's great too, but it's bloody expensive!

Every VAG car i've had has always been 'notchy' first to second, especially when warming up.
That also includes company cars that have been less than a year old!!
As for the oil, i can't remember what i used to use, i don't think it was redline, but agreed, the oil can make alot of difference

Thanks for that Khare :afro:

No worries dude! Good guides there.
Just reporting that although I've done no tweeking or anything as I've been sorting out other stuff, this problems seems to have gone. Was fine this morning, as normal. Got to go to London tomorrow really early in the morning so will see if it's the cold that affects this.

That's exactly how i have to drive mine which tbh is rather irritating as you have to take it pretty easy for a while or end up crunching the box like hell.

So if i was doing a full gearbox oil change will i be needing 2 bottles of this gear?

Hmm, after a bit or research into the matter im hearing mixed reviews on the stuff and quite a few people are saying to stick to the genuine VW fluid as it's better at lower temperatures whereas the Redline stuff is best under high temp eg. motorsport / racing etc....What do you guys think or have experienced using the Redline fluids?
-
As RJ said, some people swear by it and I have heard of it work miracles on gearboxes with crunches, whines and bangs. I've not experimented with it myself so I can't comment on experience.

must be a 'feature' of cable shift boxes then. my mk2 16v box doesnt do this its absolutely minty fresh. came from a car which stayed in london all its life and was never ragged off the lights

I read about the castrol sms-x, which I think is pretty similar to redline. People were saying it worked wonders. But like I mentioned earlier, it made no difference at all to my gearbox crunch and I added molyslip after sometime to see if that helped, but it never.

Cable and rod change, all the same.

looks like you were unlucky with all of yours then, my rod shift is mint

I defo prefer the rod set up and feel.
