Title: Temperature gage

Hi my temperature gage stopped working, so i replaced the temperature sender. The needle on the gage now goes right over after a few minutes and the red light flashes. The fan kicks in when it should and i am not loosing any coolant. The car is a 1986 mk2 8 valve gti and the temp sender is from gsf. Do you think it is just a dodgy temp sender or somthing more serious?

It has been said that non genuine temperature sensors are not as good as the ones from VW, and there is little price difference. I dont know if the sensors will 'fail' suddenly though. The problem may be in the guage in the clocks.

If you have a multimeter, test the resistance of the old and new sensors (at room temperature, then say after sitting both on a radiator to warm up). If the resistances are similar, the fault is likely elsewhere.

if gauge doesnt shoot up when wire is disconnected again, the sensor is dead. you changed the small black one with the red/yel wire right?

Yeah the small black one with the red/yellow wire. The gage doesn't move with the wire disconnected. I phoned vw today and they said a new sensor is £28 the gsf one was £4. Do you think it's worth trying another gsf one or gettin the vw one?

i would go with vw if you can, the pattern ones are known to be a bit crap. though as long as the new gsf one works it should be ok if it doesnt read quite right as its only the dash gauge.

if it was for the ecu then i would only buy vw sensors

Thanks for the advice ill go for the vw one. This might be a stupid question but what do you mean by a sensors for the ecu

the blue sensor, beside the black one, is for the ECU and is important for fuelling....

nah there isnt an ecu sensor for this car, i was just saying if you were buying an ecu sensor then always go vw :)

Replaced the gsf sensor with a vw one today. It all seems to be working now gage sits just under half way. Thanks for your help jhon and rob.
