ok how do i remove the rear bumper as i want to take the towbar off
is it tricky or easy
cheers
-
if i remember correctly you unbolt the two bolts under the car. then there are two screws at the bottom corners of the bumper.
should slide out.
-
This is a doddle if the bolts are not seized..
There will be three small bolts on the underside of the bumper two near the bottom of the back arches and one around the middle of the rear bumper remove these first
then there are two each side holding the bumper in place bolt from underneath. these are the hard ones to remove as they become seized up.
get these opf and all you do is slide the bumped backwards off the slide mounts

are there? i don't think i've ever undone these? how odd...............
-
sorry, confused by this..... not being sarcastic! i honestly don't know what bolts your talking about?
-
There just little self tappers holding the plastic in place. Not essential and probably missing if youve never noticed them. But yes i agree with you all its an easy job. The only trouble i had was moving the exhaust out of the way to get at the 2 bolts on one side as my exhaust silencer was huge!
-
To take the bumper off there are just 4 bolts, look underneath and you'll see the 2 big metal supports either side and the bolts holding them on. Unfortunately the nuts are square jobbies that just sit in a square hole if you get me, so they can pup out when you try to undo the bolts. Takes a bit of a fiddle to get them back into the slots, but shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to swap the bumper if the bolts arn't totally siezed.
-
Mine was held on with your average bolt, not square jobbies. i just used a socket set to remove them. Might be different on different years.
-
Yeah the bolts are standard, I mean they are screwed into nuts that sit in a square hole, if they pop out the bolt will just turn without loosening if you get me.
-
Ah i see what you mean now. I must have got lucky cos i didnt have this problem.
-
Yeah only had the problem with one, the other 3 were well stuck in there :)
-
There are 3 self tapping bolts with a 8mm (I think) sized hex head on the under side of the actual bumper. 1 attaching the bumper to the trailing edge of each arch and 1 just beside the exhaust recess, on the offside of the exhaust!
use a 17mm socket on the 4 bolts underneath (2 either side) you may have to move the exhaust for 2 of them!
Once these are all undone you slide the bumper off.
In true Haynes style refitting is the reversal of removal. But you may need to fish around to get the holes to line up.
-
Is that for big bumper models then? Deffo no other bolts apart from the 4 main ones on the small bumper models.
-
Yes big bumper.

I had a nightmare removing the towbar from my 1991 16v...I thought it was going to be simple but the capture nut on the left frame spar inside the body came adrift and I needed to get my blacksmith mate to bring a stick welder round to hold it in place before I could undo it.
And the towbar the first owner of the car had fitted was like a steel RSJ running the whole width of the car inside the plastic bumper shell. It weighed a ton as well ? mpg has gone up massively since I ditched it ? which is nice.
Still waiting for the cash to mount up before I can get a new rear bumper and then get it sprayed up and praying no one runs in the back of the car or it will be an instant write off!!!!
Took two of us most of a weekend to sort it out ? fiddliest and most painful job I've ever done on a car
Hope you have better luck

I too had a nightmare removing a tow bar once. it was bolted right through the boot to the underside on a volvo. Me and a mate both were armed with socked wrenches and he turned the top while i held the bottom. The only problem was he had a nice 1m long wrench and i had a silly little standard wrench. i nearly lost all my fingers when he started turning!
