Title: Lower MPG in cold weather?
Post by: simonkit on 30 January 2011, 16:53
I guess it makes sense, colder/more air means more fuel needed hence lower MPG - just wondered if other GTI owners had noticed a fall in average MPG during the cold weather,. Mine has gone from 33 - 30mpg

What you are seeing is completely normal behaviour.

The car takes longer to warm up.
It has to push itself though thicker air.
You run more accessories (lights, wipers and such).

All this uses more energy.

Absolutely - in summer i average around 31-33 mpg, im now seeing an average of 27-29 mpg. I also put this down to leaving the engine running whilst de-icing the damn thing if i forget to put it in the garage overnight!
