help...... again please???
i have had some starting problems on my mk3 gti 8v
it will start & suddenly cut out, it does this about 3 or 4 times before it starts ok
i was advised it may be the ecu relay (no30), so i bought one and changed it
but it hasnt made any difference
any more ideas more be a great help
-
what engine code and year is it
-
its a 94. not sure about engine code.
where would i find that?
cheers
-
prob easier to get us the part number off the ecu. basically i suspect theres a problem with the factory immobiliser, though usually its only on 96 cars. but if we can get part number off ecu that'll confirm it either way :)
other things it could be is damp in the dizzy cap or leads, faulty cap arm or leads, faulty coil, or maybe a dodgy crank sensor. its worth cleaning out the throttle body as well
-
new dizzy cap & arm
new plugs
t/body & air intake all removed & cleaned out
it does have symtoms of immobilisor, but i dint think it had one?

sounds like a sensor, dose it cut out when hot and wont start until it as cooled down
-
no
it does either when first started, or if i drive up road to shop, stop it, then it does it again.
so it does hot and cold really.
-
does it have an isv?
-
sorry
whats an 'isv'?
-
does it look like this:

or more like this (its a mk2, but mk3 is similar, isv is the metal tube thing between the rocker cover and the inlet):

Throttle body?
-
Crank position sensor is my guess! If you do a search there are pages and pages on this.
Best of luck with it!

Oi John that's copyright infringement
-
yeah id go with crank sensor, you have an AGG or ADY :)
-
are AGG & AGY fault codes?
i have no way of fault checking
what symptoms will faulty crank sensor give?

no these are not fault codes, they are engine codes. This code can be found on the white sticker that is normally in the boot of your car and stuck inside the cover of your VW service book.
-
And on the top cambelt cover too
-
no service book
nothing written on rocker box
havent looked in boot for a sticker yet
-
symptoms of a faulty crank sensor are exactly what you describe in your first post, my ABF engine did exactly the same :)
