Also would an analogue Gunson Gastester be suitable for the CO reading?

I use the Gunson gas tester and whilst a bit fiddly to get just right , does the job. The timing light needs to be adjustable so that you can adjust the advance setting - mine is a Gunson timing light and adjusts from 0 to 60 degrees. I would say that the one on e-bay does not adjust.

Hi Paul,

Sorry to disagree with dad but yes, that one will do fine. You don't need a timing light with an advance option, just any basic one such as the one you've shown.  You tippex on a marker at the appropriate advance setting on the flywheel and time it to that.

Mine came from ebay for a couple of pounds more, it was very similar draper model and did a fine job of resetting my 8v GTi PB engine.

All you need to do is follow the excellent guide by rubjonny.  Hope you notice how well it then runs.

'Dad' again - if you want to check that the ignition advances by 30 degrees when you re-plug the blue temp sensor in following RJ's guide, you need one that is adjustable. If you are only ever going to buy one then buy the best you can afford is my philosphy!!

how do you add a 30 deg mark to the flywheel? (this may be a silly question)

Well, you already have Top Dead Centre and 6 degrees before TDC, so you know the spacing for 6 degrees.  Using that spacing you continue round the flywheel.  You're going to be looking for 30 degrees more than the previous mark, so five more spacings will give you the final 36 before TDC mark. 

Tippex in the 36 and maybe the 24 degrees, and any others you fancy while you are at it.

I previously tried an adjustable timing light and found it extremely fiddly.

Hope it runs well afterwards!

Bought a vintage one at a car boot for 3 quid. Did it fine.

this one will be fine, for the 30degree test i never bother measuring it, i just watch to see if the diamond make buggers off out of view when you plug it in. if it does that then you can be pretty sure everything is ok, yeah you cant see if it goes 30degrees but if car drives nice after you finished then you know its ok :)

a light with advance is nice if you want to spend the extra, one with a rev counter in would bemore handy though saves you having to look at the dash every 5 seconds
