Title: Oil temp sensor?

I drive a 1990 Gti 16v.  My oil temp display is reading - --.  All the other readings seem to be okay.  Does the oil temperature sensor need replacing?  If so where abouts is this located and how much is a new one likely to cost?

Hello m
I recently bought a mk2 16v with the same prob.
look behind on the back of the head behind the dizzy and you will see a brass sender and probably a wire swaying around (cant remember what colour but can get back to you) connect it back up like i did and hey presto0oil temp readings

I think I've found the brass sender bolted to the back of the head behind the distributer.  There is no wire attached but has what looks like a small disk on the end.  There is also a green wire that has been cut emerging from other wires just behind the distributor.  Would be greatfull if you could let me know the colour of your wire.

The wire you need to connect up is green and black striped-I'll send you a picture of mine via E-mail (excuse the oil!) hope this helps. :)
