I've got a bit of an oil leak on my gti, and want to get it sorted.
Some of it looks like it could be the sump gasket, but there is oil that has flicked about a bit, so it looks as though it is also the crank seals?
How dificult are these to change? does the engine have to come out?
Is there anything else that could be the problem?

You need to clean the affected area, then keep an eye on it, should see exactly where the oil is coming from, well hopefully ?:laugh:
The front crank oil seal can be changed with the engine in situ, you will need to remove the crank pully and the crank sprocket, the centre bolt that holds the crank sprocket is tight. Make sure you set up the timing before removing.
If i remember right then you can remove the housing and renew the seal.
Might as well change all the timing belt at the same time.

I was planning on changing the timing belt soon anyway, so I'll do both of these together.
I will make sure it isn't just the sump gasket leaking first though.

I think you have to remove the sump to be able to remove the crank oil seal housing.

I bought a haynes manual yesterday to investigate this.
To remove the "front seal" (Which I guess is the LH end of the engine, and the one that appears to be leaking). You do not need to remove the engine, or the sump. However, it says that VW Tool 2085 should be used. (The alternative is to drill the old seal, screw in a self tapper, and pull out the seal with some pliers.
What does tool 2085 do? and where can I get it from? I've found the picture in the haynes manual, but can't work out what it does.

also, I have a problem. While searching for the oil leak, I checked to make sure that the water pump bolts were tight.

Its a little plastic plug thing, located on the bottom of the water pump. Nothing came out of the hole after I broke it off (I think the threaded part of the plug is still in the pump, but what is it for? and do I need another one? (it is about 15mm long, by about 12mm Diameter.

well, no fluid of any kind has came out of this hole, so I guess it isn't a big problem. But what is the plug for?

which seal are you calling the front seal? i've just looked in my haynes and there are 3 seals that say to use the 2085 tool? it also says prise it out or use the tool so if you can prise it out then you might as well. you may have to renew them if you damage them but i suppose thats what your doing anyway.
it looks like you screw the big bit in then screw the little bit in to push against something, pulling out the seal? does that make anysense?! :laugh: i was thinking along the lines of a crank extractor for bikes.......
the tool will have to be bought from VW themselves so i cant see it being cheap.

has anyone got any idea's on what this little plastic plug thing is?
gtijoe, I am assuming the front seal is the seal on the drivers side. That is the one I need to replace.
