Title: reverse switch location?

Ive been trying for ages to locate and possibly change the reversing sensor on my 99 1.8t agu as ive got no reverse lights. Ive followed all the guides and its still not where they say it is, ive attached a pic, ive tried disconnecting the white socket plug thinking it was that as a previous guide said it was, but its made no difference, ive used the vortex guide and its just not where it says it is- according to the pics attached to that walkthrough the sensor is next to the shifter and its screws out with the connector on it, but there is just nothing near the shifter or the whole area it should be,

That certainly looks like the right place for a reverse switch, there should be 2 wires going to it. If you unplug it and use something like a paperclip to link the 2 wires then switch on your ignition and see if the rev lights are on.
 Have you checked both bulbs too?
