they catch oil droplets / mist from engine breather.    more optimal fore motorsport / performance use than throwing it down the inlet manifold

they are great on the mk4 platform as it has a useless PCV system with brittle plastic pipes whih are £40 each to replace... I had one on my 1.8t and it was a good piece of kit paid a lot of money for mine though..  dont know the advantages on your motor..
