Title: Gear shift linkage problem?
Post by: mtdnelson on 26 January 2011, 21:11
Hi,

A friend replaced the clutch in my 8v Mk2 GTI a few years ago. I'm pretty sure we also replaced the two little rods between the gearstick and box at the same time (parts were from GSF). I haven't driven the car much since, so I haven't got around to fixing this problem...

Everything else seems fine, but I need to push the stick through the gate for reverse before I can get it into first or second gear. It's a bit of a pain at traffic lights, sincefirst and reverse are easy to mix up!

Does anyone have any idea what might have caused this? I'm speculating, but maybe the replacement rods are slightly the wrong length?

I'm no mechanic, but I'm interested to see if I can sort it out. I've had a look around, and this post http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33100.0 seems relevant.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Michael

I had the exact same problem and fix it with a gear linkage kit

You may need other bushes, as you say. If that the case then the guide you found is the one to follow.

Alternatively, it may just need aligned properly after being rebuilt. This wee tool may help (tho apparently it can be done without) and will be useful if you replace other bushes too:

Thanks very much for your advice. It's not going to happen immediately, but it is one of the few remaining problems I have to sort out on the car. It's great to get an idea of what I need to do after a couple of years of ignoring the problem completely by not driving the car!

I just have too many projects on the go and not enough money.

Still, when I get around to sorting this out, replacing the alternator, and getting a little bit of bodywork sorted out, then the car will be suitable for driving every day again (not bad for a 25 year old car).

Its amazing what a bit of TLC will do! its enough to keep an old VW going for many years!

Would be good to see some pics of the beast if you have any??
