Hi all, i have some weird half worn discs at the front, and braking is getting scary, so am looking to replace them!
I went into the parts place and he said there were two types for the car, apparantly two different diameters from the hub face to the top of the disc. Question is, does it matter which i get, and would it be possible at this time to upgrade to some better (possibly ventilated) discs from a GTI or something, or is it not worth it?
Calipers are standard and im running G60 steels, dont know if thats relevant?
Will post some pics of the discs, see if anyone knows why they are wearing funny.
Thanks

My 1.3 had 239mm front disks. They were 10mm solid. 8v's also have 239mm diameter, but they're 18 or 20 mm thick bcos they are vented. 16v's have 256mm vented disks.. I reckon you'd have to change the calipers for any upgrade, as I don't think you'd get the extra 10mm in there with new pads etc..I got black diamonds drilled and grooved for the 1.3, massive improvement over standard, and they're not too expensive...

If they are wearing odd then you could have a sticking caliper.

buy them from here instead, the obviously dont know golfs as only 1 size of disc ever fitted to mk2 1.3:

Looking on that website it says the 1.3 are 239x10 and the next ones are 239x12. The chap in the shop said i had a choice of 38.6mm or 35mm. I imagine that that corresponds to the 10mm or 12mm discs, and the 10mm ones would be 35mm overall. Does that mean though, that the 12mm ones wont fit my car? If they do both fit, is there a preference to which ones i get?
Thanks

It lists the disc for the 1.3 car as being 10mm thick- so I would get that, with a set of pads for the 1.3, and it will all fit. The thicker 12mm disk will need the pads to suit (i.e. pads for a 1.6-1.8 car) and these may not fit your calipers....

Seems logical enough i suppose!
I will try and post a photo later of the worn disc, see if anyone knows why they are wearing strange..
Thanks

Is the difference in thickness vented and non vented.

no these are both solid discs, the vented ones are 20mm thick :)
if you wanted to go for the slightly thicker solid disc then you would also have to fit the matching pads, and also change the calipers for higher spec 239mm 'VWII' ones. can find em on various mk2, mk3, polo, SEAT etc. but if did that, fit gti vented discs and pads instead.
but really, pretty pointless exercise on a 1.3 unless you fancy an engien swap further down the line. and if you do, seriously think about fitting somethign bigger, might as well go all out if going to effort of caliper swap and fluid bleeding
oh and did you know the 239x10 mm discs were fitted to the Golf Rallye?
at the back

Thanks John, most informative as usual :)
I do want to go for an engine upgrade one day, might be cheaper than a new car if i can get the right engine...
