Title: Banging noise from backend/suspension
Post by: Geordie on 25 January 2011, 16:38
Hey

Ive got a MK IV 1.8Twhich has a banging noise coming from the backend/suspension that has just got worse and worse over the last 6months.  It happens when going over any bumps and pot holes, it feels like theres no suspension, the banging noise is that bad now.

Anyone got any ideas,  i dont know anything about cars but Im presuming off the noise and feel that the shocks must have gone, but my mate said it could be something to do with the rear bushes.

Rear bushes or rear shocks could be the cause but more likely to be the bushes.

Moneys on Rear Bushes.

If the shocks went it wouldn't make it bang but it will bounce all over the place like mine did

Is your car level each side?

Nice one, cheers for that.

Yeah it is level on each side, gonna get the bushes replaced and take it from there.

Which bushes do you recommend, read that people seem to like the Seat Leon Cupra R ones are good to replace them with.

Also worth checking:

If it's lowered check that it isn't the exhaust making contact with the rear beam.  Lowering the car brings the beam closer to the exhaust where it kicks up and over.  The rear hangers for the exhaust weaken and stretch over time which causes the exhaust to hang lower.  With the car on the ground stick you arm under the car and follow the exhaust up and over the beam if you find you can only fit a finger or two between the exhaust pipe and beam they will be making contact over everything bump.

Yes two bushes, two bolts and two nut, the nuts and bolts are only cheap so may as well change them as the old bolts and nuts well properly be foobard as myn were.
