Hi all, so after paying £450 to have the cambelt done on my AUQ I didnt drive it much for a couple of days, only going 2 miles to work and back. Now i hate this as i know it never really warms up properly so i make sure to take it out in the evening to do just that, so yesterday i took her out for a little test drive only to notice the smell of burning rubber when i came to a standstill, so i let it wind down then turned her off, popped the cambelt cover only to see the belt looked like it was 40k old and had worked itself about 3-4mm off the pulley!!!! :@
Now i've driven it to work today so i can take it over to him at lunch, my question is, should i have run the cambelt in more before giving it some beans?? Which i didn't really do but i certainly put my foot down. Also looks like cheap belt/parts for 450 notes the c*nt

u should of gone vw if u where payin that i had quote from them last week about £360 (crewe)cambelt/tensioner i dont think u have to run them in.if he says ur fault smash him. good luck
-
thats bad get the guy to replace it asap..
-
Sounds like it was not tensioned enough
-
was tensioner replaced or was old one re-used ?? i would go for tensioner fail !
-
Sounds like the little idler wheel washer was put on the wrong side of the pulley, ( or left the old one on) thus throwing the belt out a bit ,
-
They have a hydraulic tensioner so if the old one was reused it could have failed...
-
Well the receipt says belt, tensioner, water pump; it's a shame the blokes a really nice chap and has known my dad for years, since college, im just wondering if he's bein a 2 bob and purposely tried to 1 nil me, or he has made a genuine mistake, anyways - PIC:

You can even see the ribs in the belt coming through, it's just not right is it.
-
I had a look at mine yesterday actually (randomly..) anyway, mine sits the same as yours pretty much, i.e towards the outer of the pulley (might even be flush or there abouts - I'll have a look later when I head out)
-
Yeah but i can feel the lip on the inside of the belt where it is not sat completley on the pulley, and what else could the burning rubber smell be?

if it isn't sitting right etc and seeing as you paid top dollar I'd be straight back to the place you got it done to see what they say and when they can fit you in to do it properly.....
-
Take it back asap. For that money you expect peace of mind not more hassle.
-
Just popped down there, he said the belt is where it should be sitting etc etc so f**k knows, if it snaps and f**ks he;ll be getting me a new engine!

I doubt it.
-
Just looks wrong and would expect the tensioner to have been fitted incorrectly. Also as you suggest it doesn't look particularly box fresh.
-
Actually just popped downstairs to check mine, it too shows about 3-4mm of the pulley teeth. This was fitted about 4 yrs and 50k ago by Jabbasport, so I suspect it's right.

Well i'm gonna give it a good run before work tomoro and stop by him on the way so he can smell what im smelling once it's up to temp.
-
Guess he might not have clipped the cover on square and it's rubbing on one of the pulleys or dropped something onto the exhaust.
Did you have the aux belts changed too?
-
No just the cambelt tensioner and water pump, i can do the rest my self!
-
My belt also sits like that, as did my last golfs.
Have a look inside the cover to see if there's a mark where the belts been rubbing against it.
-
Will do i thought the smell maybe could just be the belt bedding in but i've never had it happen before that's why i hit paranoid mode, if he says it's not going to break then i suppose he's right but i'll stil be cautious and keep a nose out for the smell.

Still does not seem right :undecided:

Does the tensioner come with the cambelt kit from vw dealer or is it a seperate purchase????
-
To my knowledge i think theres two kit's 1 with and 1 without?
