right just wondering as an astra gte digital dash will fit into a mk2 golf will it fit into a mk3 golf? only problem i can really see is the fact that the gte clocks use a transponder but will this just plug into the box? got an 02 box i think on a tdi??
-
I think the problem will be the rev counter, not sure how you get that to work.

why will that be a problem? can just use the original signal wire that the clocks use now

Not that easy, Astra GTE use a pulsed feed from the alternator, the signal wire you have now will not work.
Not 100% sure how you would get around it.

i was under the impression that the gte dash used pulsed anyway like all digi dashes? also is the mk3 not the same as a mk2? as they work fine in them
-
very interested to see how this thread turns out. i may do this mod if you can get it to work.
i put the digi dash in my mk1 astra gte and loved it.
didnt no you could put them in golfs
-
I have converted loads of these.
Will check into the MK3 for you a bit later mate.......Sure we can can do it.
-
You may find this of interest in the meantime time mate. Dom knows everything about digi-dash's.
He has his own little forum, here is the link........

And his shop......

mk2 uses a speedo cable from memory, are you sure it is the Astra dash fitted and not something else.
-
MK2 digifiz uses a speedo sensor in the gearbox :)
if the astra dashneeds a pulsed -ve signal the same as what the standard MK2 golf uses then open the coil and put a wire to the -ve terminal. if it needs an alternator signal simply run a wire to the 2nd unused pin on the alternator plug. if it uses the same signal as the mk2 digifiz dash, then the oem mk3 rev signal wire is compatible
-
well its the same manufacturer that makes the digifiz as iv done some research inot it, its in theory the same as a mk2 golf housing as many ppl have fitted them into the mk2 without much trouble, so dont know if it will fit in the housing but will pull my clocks out later and find out

Astra dashes were made by VDO, I remember mine had a sticker on the back.
-
vdo made the dashes in the mk2 that would make sense then

Guess so, I know 100% mine were VDO in the Astra as I took them out to replace a bulb that had blown.
-
just been and had a little play with a spare dashboard iv got they will fit with a little bit of trimming on the dash board you cant see it when the cluster surround is on so no worries also only other problem is that the original clocks have upswept housing on them and the gte has downswept so to get round this my plan is chop the back off both sets e.g. the plastic housing and then put the gte part into the mk3 and then put the eclectronics from gte clocks on the back of that this way you still keep all the original mounting points for the clocks so theyll look oem well ish lol depends how good you can chop and put them back together
-
Ask Dom on the link to that forum mate about fitment.
I have put them in a MK3 Astra 1.6, Escort RS Turbo, 309 GTI and MK2 Astra SRI. Trimming them to fit is all part of the fun  I know Dom will be more than happy to help and I will start doing some research this afternoon as may put one in Michele's MK3 Golf GTI 8v she bought last week
-
emailed so lets see what he says tbh i cant see their being a problem as they fit in a mk2 easy enough without any problems so why not a mk3??
-
If you manage to get it all dont mate would be good to do a how to guide on the site.
I no i will follow it lol

spoke to dom and he said i shouldnt have a problem with any of it, only problem i may encounter is the pulse from the gold for the rev counter as wayne stated but he said he can make a conversion unit for this so it will work, currently looking for a spare set of clocks for the golf and the digi dash so i can pull the front off and sort it, but apart from the wiring have looked at it properly now and the golf front will retain its original mounting holes to look oem and the gte dash will attach to the back of the hybrid front fascia so to speak the same way it did, with bolts so all in all should come together easily, so dash out time it is again lol
-
ask him which rev counter signal is used to make it work on a mk2, if its the alternator signal then you're in luck, if not then it may be tricky. no coil on a diesel :(
-
he couldnt tell me as hes not that clued up on mk2's lol it can be either i think but he said he can sort it out for £35 for a convertor so all is doable he said do it and find out
-
cool thats a good price, do you recon he could do something like 1.8t conversion to mk2 coil -ve signal, maybe 6 pot to 4pot? if so he'll have a line of mk1/mk2 customers queueing up round the virtual block :)
-
will see what i can do
-
As for housing that is going to be the sod!! I found this with when I put one into my Pug 309 GTI......If only I had taken pictures.
Anyway after a little search on the net I found this., the end result is far from perfect imo as in a nice smooth finish but it shows on a rather tricky dash (Corsa B) on how this chap did it......
http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/other-mechanical-electrical/355117-fitting-gte-digital-dash-into-corsa-b.html
-
yeah the biggest problem i see is that the digi dash is slightly larger than the mk3 only marginally but couple that with the shape difference as the mk3 has rounded edges and so on i dont think youl be able to see the full gauges of the digi dash but im gonna get chopping soon and find out lol
-
I'm very interested to see how this pans out, i'll be keeping an eye out for this!
-
well better get looking now lol got a bit bored today so got going lol
gte clock front chopped up
(http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc41/davies1644/IMG_0199.jpg)
the 2 semi merged lol
(http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc41/davies1644/IMG_0200.jpg)
and it half back together just need to smooth the two together as their is a msall gap between the two at the top
(http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc41/davies1644/IMG_0201.jpg)
what does everyone think???
-
Looks like your blanking a lot of the dials :undecided:

Looks like your blanking a lot of the dials :undecided:
Well looks can be deceiving lol only a very fraction of the top corners and mine being a diesel I'm not too fussed about the top of the rev gauge lol

Excellent work mate. I think you have done really well there. Your thread is going to be a daily viewing for me now as I am very interested. Dom lives just up the road from me and he knows everything to know about Digi-dash's. With the wiring if you get in a complete pickle come to mine and I will see what I can do......Although I dont know how far away from Milton Keynes you are??!!
-
Quite a treck away tbh have figured most of te wiring out only problem I have really is I can't work out what wire it is for the engine management light tbh

What year and model is your car mate?

What about mfa on GTi's?

What about mfa on GTi's?
The MFA will be lost mate. But who needs an MFA with a Digi-dash
-
I know a lot of people use blue bulbs etc to give the MK4 look to their Golf.
Well this does not cut the Digi-dash from this new trend! Dom sells the film for a few quid. He has loads of different colours, this being the blue......

hit a brick wall dont own a glue gun doh! so ordered one then the two faces will be put together all wiring is figured out only bit im worried about is the speedo sensor should just drop in the box as its an electronic one like the one in the car already fingers crossed

Same as mate......Always loved them!!
Two funny stories aswell about them.....
Whan I had my Astra GTE 16v back in the late 90's I remember taking some really attractive but very thick girl out. I was coming back on this very long bit of 'private road' doing over 120mph. I am concentrating like mad when she says very casually 'Oh look, your speedo says one two three' !!
The other one was in my 309 GTI that I had put a digi in. This was 5 or so years ago. I teach Kickboxing and have been doing this for years. A few of my mates from the gym wanted to come along to a training session and to see what they thought. So I offered to pick them up. Now I am fairly big as been bodybuilding for 15 years, 16st and 6ft but these blokes make me look tiny! Well all 3 of them squeezed into my 309 to which they all said 'Check out the dash.....Paul that is amazing' As they were not into cars they never knew about the digi dash so for the 20 mins it took to get from the gym to my training hall they were all going on about the dash.....it was a classic!!

OMG my eyessssss

-
i love em and thats why im doing it lol looks like a mixed bag some people like them some dont well i do cause its different and thats the exact response you get what the hell is that?? shouldnt be in their lol
-
Not a fan either tbh! It'll take quite a bit of skill to get them to fit properly and look half decent.
That blue set are a rubbish fit and just look like a massive bodge, then there's the colour
-
tbh already worked mine out only need to smooth the top part over thats it only issue i have is that the top edges of the gauges will be covered but im not really that bothered tbh

Looking at the hazard switch that is a Astra
-
i also thought the above just didnt want to say anything lol
-
Its been installed into a MK4 Astra not a MK2........MK4 Astra is harder than a 309 GTI to install.

MK2 Astra hazard is situated on the side of the dash panel. MK3 Astra is situated in between the air vents and cavalier 2/3 are situated on the side dash panel.
Only know this as owned 4 GTE's (2 being 16v's) 2 MK3 Astra GSI's, 1 MK3 Cav SRI and 1 MK3 Cav GSI.
The MK4 Astra's put them on top of the steering colum.
I know sh!t loads about 80's and 90's Vauxhall's but learning about VW's thus my interest in this thread as want to see a Digi in a VW!
-
yeah that digi is awesome! but i aint gonna cut it up to fit in my mk3! not at that pricel ol
-
just a little update i reckon its taken me less than 4 hours to do this a lot less tbh but hey its done and i think it looks good only thing that could be done if your a perfectionist is to sand the filler more and it would look spot on, but for the time being its going in as i dont have any clocks in my daily car now lol

Whereabouts do you live mate......If you are near Milton Keynes I can help you install it. What code is your transducer and did it come with the digi-dash as there are 3 separate transducers and it needs to be the correct one.

im attempting this in my mk2 and need a little bit of help on wiring advice!

what you stuck with mate ?
