Hi, I am an 18 year old male driving a 1.6 mk3 golf and I just got my insurance renewal through for £2200! I shopped around for insurance and the cheapest I could find was around £1700
Its so high because I got points on my licence from when I was younger and had a moped, I also have a claim on my insurance now (my wheel fell off whilst driving and hit another car!).
Anyway I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what would happen if I didnt declare the points to my insurance company as they are no longer on my licence but are meant to stay on your insurance for 5 years. Is there anyway they can find out I used to have points on my licence?
My insurance would be like £300 cheaper without these points and i cant afford to declare them, plus I really dont want to be driving a daewoo matiz or suzuki alto

yes they can
its illegal
if the worst happens and you hit someone you WONT BE INSURED
and that will be the LEAST of ya worries.
-
Stupid idea not to notify them! Like mods :)
-
ya need to ask this.... ya sure ya have the sense to be driving??
-
Not declaring any past points or accidents within the time frame the insurer requests will devoid your policy. So if you lie and have a crash you'll have p*ssed £1700 up the wall, ruined somebody else's day and be in some serious sh*t which could result in a driving ban. You'll be back to square one with an even bigger hill to climb when you're allowed back on the road.
This'll happen even if you rear end somebody at low impact speed. Basically any claim (accident or theft) and your insurer will be running a full check on your past before they even think about paying out.
-
its not just the failure to declare, i am sure the polis will take it a LOT further
-
Yup the Fuzz don't like this kind of silly business and I'll be kicking your a*s for making my insurance policy increase each year.
-
So your insurance will be £300.00 cheaper if you don't declare them, considering your premium is £2200.00, you probably can't afford to drive if you can't afford declare your points. Suck it up, buy a sh!t car to drive around in for another year or so.

stupid idea which can / will only end in tears
-
yer i wouldnt try and hide it as the insurance company will
probably already know you have points etc,
i had a friend that did this then crashed his car and the courts slap him with a huge fine....

insurance companies seem to know everything anyway so no point trying to hide anything, how else do other companies know when your policy is coming to an end?
does anyone know if the national database also applies to insurance companies as well?
-
im pretty sure insurance companys get there info
from the national database and the dvla
-
Just to let you know as it seems you have already done a quote with and with out the points.
Every quote you do is saved on a database at the company (even through go compare ect the quotes get saved)
I know this as I did a quote to see what it would be like if I lowerd my car I then got a call and had to prove my car was standard which was a total buggar as they lost numerous letters of mine and emails and then tried to cancel my insurence.
Also someone on here did a quote saying he had points to see how much it would go up. He then got a call and had to send his lisence away so they could make sure he haddent just received points.
Also pretty sure they can see all your previous driving convictions ect.
One question I've got though, if insurence companies have all this info on were you live crashes, claimes, penalties ect. Why do we waste ages putting all this info in. Surely all they'd need is car reg, postcode and house number, name, and job.
-
Just wait a year for ya premiums to go down, my mate got 6 points for what he said he was doing 54mph in a 30mph and didnt get clocked, just seen by a policeman on a bike, blatant liar. Hes now driving a 1.1 saxo and had to sell that for a moped as that was even too dear lol, so just a moped for a year.
-
To put it bluntly it is idiots who don't declare stuff who push insurance premiums up for everyone else.
-
always declare if you have a serious accident and they find out which the can really easily, because believe they will look no insurer wants to pay out if they can get out of it, not only will you have the accident problems etc but you could become personally liable
-
So basically what everyone else is too nice to say is this; you're a f**king idiot to be asking such a question nevermind considering it.

Really, for the sake of £300?
My mis happenings with the law doubled my insurance cost and added as near as makes no difference an extra grand. You have to live your mistakes in life I'm afraid.
-
What about if somebody reverses into you and both with same company and no excess is paid, does that count as an accident?
I have 7 points on my licence and really wish i didnt but im prepared to pay more for insurance until they come off
-
Don't do it.
I have had three total losses (about 35k worth ) one my fault, one someone elses and one car stolen and they are very thorough with their checking.
The last one I had a three way phone conversation between myself, Insurers and DVLA where they checked if my declared points matched what DVLA had on their database.
Basically if these don't match you are in all sorts of bother.
I know its tempting but if you have any sort of claim - even not your fault they will find it.
