Title: How expensive are VR6's to own?!
Post by: Godzilla on 23 January 2011, 14:26
This may sound a silly question as I am talking about an almost 3 litre V6 car.......But!!  Since petrol prices have gone up big engined cars have dropped in second hand prices. I have seen a few cheapish VR6's for sale and am interested. Insurance should not be a problem as I am 36 years old with 9 years no claims and no points, but what are they like to run, are they stupid as in fuel consumption?  I have had a MK3 GTI 16v before and thought that was ok as in fuel consumption.  For example on a MK3 VR6 with fuel prices at say $1.30 a litre (Pound sign does not work on computer!) what could be expected with a bit of town driving and some A roads to $20 as in mileage?

If you have to ask petrol costs then don't buy one, they heavy on fuel at the best of times

Thanks mate.....So very fuel hungry!  Will keep the hunt on for a GTI 16v as since Michele got her MK3 8v the other night and want another MK3 Golf!!  I have had and love the MK2's but think I will keep my open for the MK3

Insurance has gone up 30% this year, been quoted £600 tpft on my 8V, 9 yrs ncb, 35 yrs old etc
Add that to higher fuel bills, I think many VR's will be getting cubed this year.

Have to disagree strongly with this. The insurance on my VR is £50 more expensive than my 8v GTI. I use classic insurance on mine which keeps the cost down. Fuel wise I am getting around 18/19mpg around town and upto around 24/25 on a trip. This is quite high but I enjoy every mile of it.

Good on you mate, hope you continue to get satisfaction out of the old girl.
In london VR's are two a penny because of the fuel and cover costs, I have seen a trail of big engined cars going into the crusher next door.
Sad but true

As far as insurance goes, I only pay about £650 fully comp for a mk3 16v GTi and I'm 27 with 5 years ncb.

my vr is just as cheap to run as my 16v was, but i have much more fun in it, did 86 miles today on £15  to pick some parts up, i have a 6branch manifold and custom 2.5 inch system with no cat or any box's, just one rear box, and average 35 mpg, not to mention the 145mph blip i had with an integra type R... buy one and regret it later... if you can keep the smile off your face...

Completly agree with jon boii, The sound is AMAZING. You only use lots of petrol in a VR to get it to roar :D
Buy it and regret it later

35mpg?
I get 33 out of my 8 valve driven like a granny (and that's the MFA so probably less than that)!

Would loe to see the proof of 35 mpg in a VR as everyone I know who has one or has had one is getting roughly the same as me and I could not get 35 out of my old 8v which was well looked after and drove reasonably sensibly.

If you ECO drive like seriously you can achieve the impossible..
I have a pic somewhere of 44.1 in my 16v  Will try and dig it out :afro:

thats because 8v's are sh!t on fuel mate as they have to rev hard in pretty much every gear, i can sit at 80mph on the motor way and my engine is at 3500 rpm, when i had my 8v i couldnt get more than 30mpg on a motorway run... around town was about 15... i see 25-28mpg in the vr around town...

as said, i stuck 15 quid in the vr this morn, and it was on red, the needle moved to 1 quater of a tank, i got there and back, 46 mile each way... and i had a 5 mile or so race with that integra that took me to 145mph... not to mention my exhaust is a straight through 2.5 inch system with no boxes...

during the week i travel 12 mile to work, and 12 mile home, i work mon to sat so make this journey 6 times, call it 25 miles a day, 150 miles a week... i fill the car up every monday morn with about 30 litres, £35 ish??? this sees me all week, and some mornings i drive like a twit home....

if you have had a 16v, then you will be able to run a VR...

I do 340 miles a week in my 16v, if I fill her up on Sunday night she's still above the red on Friday morning, could probably do the whole week on one tank but I'm a wuss on driving on the red line, but I'm averaging around 36mpg, can't complain really.

I still find this hard to believe personally Mate. Mine has a Pipercross induction kit and nothing else. I drive 16 miles a day for work Monday to Friday and regular use oer the weekend averaging 50/75 miles per weekend and mine uses £35/40 per week. I check the MFA (which I know is not 100% accurate) and am usually on the 18/19 mpg mark. I drive it hard smetimes but most of the time reasonably sensibly and even when driving down the M6 this weekend I only saw 24mpg. I would love to hear what other VR drivers are getting from their daily usage.

I'm the same as Deano, i get about 19 - 23 mpg and no more...we don't have motorways so i can't comment on that part.

I got one to replace my 8v GTi for my 21st Birthday, it tore the 8v apart... I'm paying 580 fully comp, 21 4 years NCB.

Buy it and regret later...

ahh you have found me out... im lying about my fuel consumption for own personal gain...  im not asking you to belive me, im telling you how it is... 8v's are sh!t on fuel... i should know i owned one for 2 years, then a 16v for another 18 months, and that was much better on fuel, the vr is just as good as the 16v... to be honest, i bored now anyway, belive what you want...

from an insurance point f view, with my policy I've got a bhp limit but I can do anything/everything to it no matter how expensive and as long as it doesn't go past the bhp limit it is all fully covered.

It's quite a good policy I thought.

Your VR6 must be worth a fortune then Mate as it's the only one in living history that can achieve these figures. As for ownership I have owned 5 Mark 3's over a number of years. If you don't like what you hear then simply take a piccy of your clocks when they are telling you that your mpg is 35 and then I can admit I am wrong and give in to your "greater" knowledge as I believe your talking rubbish

Have seen 36mpg when i had my vr on the m40 goiing from Birmingham to London, 5th gear between 75 and 80, sorry no pics though, you'll have to trake my word for it.

It possible to take a shap shot of the MFA when coasting along gently but what about a photo of the average MPG with the MFA in the second position over a few thousand miles?
Not convinced a 2.0 8 valve is the least economical at all........
8v then 16v (not too far behind) then VR6 from road tests and all I've read on this forum.

Im with you Dean a VR6 is no way better on fuel than a 8v or a 16v as its a far bigger engine for one and why would you buy a VR6 to drive round in it like a 90 year old grandad whats the point in that if you buy a VR you just have to drive it hard thats why you buy one for the noise of the VR grunt

ha... now i remember why i dont come on this forum...

if the 8v is soooo good on fuel then why is it all ive read so far on this topic is all the 8v owners saying their motor wont get above 20mpg... my 8v wouldnt go above 20mpg, it was crap, the engine had to work so hard, the vr doesnt labour at all, as said, at 70 mph, it sits at 3000 rpm.. when the 8v sits about 5/6000 rpm...

anyway, im done on this topic now, i drove from bradford to junction 5 on the m60, (46 miles) and back again on sunday, and put £15 in the car, from red, and got there and back again, and made it to work this morning, if anyone is truly unconvinced, ill take you out for a drive in the VR. peace out.

Well your 8v must have had something seriously wrong with it then

Mine sits at 3000rpm all day long at 70mph, and cruising on the motorway can occasionally see 40mpg. Even around town I see around 30mpg!

As Dom said your 8v must have had some issues mate as my car  (8v gti) at 70mph dont rev at 5/6000 rpm and at 70mph I get more like 40mpg.

My last 8v would probably average around 30ish mpg on day to day use around town etc. I once  saw it peak on a long motorway run at 43.2mpg which left me gobsmacked to be honest. There's no f**king way a VR6 is cheaper to run - FACT

All four of my 8v's have averaged at around the 24/28 mark around town and up to 38/40 on a run. As a test I will drive my VR like a grandad this weekend and see just what I can get to round town. I would love to get to the 30/35 mark like Redders but sadly I think I will fail so may take him up on the offer to sit in his VR and see the 35mpg for myself because I am losing sleep thinking mine is wrong somewhere

Yep mine was pulling 3000rpm @ 70 and was not too bad on fuel on a longer run.

I don't think you have anything wrong when you look at the fact your running a  2.8 V6
