ok so as some of you no i have been fixing my car after a breakdown and she runs like a dream after new coil i fitted today but after i finnished fixing her i took off my vr6 front skirt/air dam and noticed something hanging down from the bumper.
it is on drivers side just infront of the wheel arch and its hanging down from onside the bumper.
its like a metal tube with a wire atached to each end.
anybody no what this is?

Well I've just had a quick look in the Haynes Book of Lies and can't see anything in there. It looks like it's got electrical wires going into it so best bet is to try to follow them to see where they go.
Almost looks like some kind of auxillary battery possibly for an after market alarm? A complete guess though unless it really is a pipe bomb buts let hope not!
-
Having a look at it now and it is a hollow metal tube with wire on each end. There is a metal bracket it clips into so have just clipped it back in.
-
Is that the headlight resister?
-
Ah just had a brain wave.
Could it be an air temp sensor for the injection system?
-
I don't think so. And the outside temperature sensor is located in the off side front lower bumper grill.

Thats correct it causes the dipped beam to come on very dim when the sidelights are on. It often fails and the wires short on the bodywork causing problems.
Just remove it.
-
Oh right. What problems can it cause? Actuly have noticed that now its back in its bracked my startor motor has hesitated a few times. Could it cause that?

Yeah im sure ive read in the past about removing it although i can't remember for what exact reason now? By removing it what effect would it have on the headlight functions? Would removing it completely improve the power input therefore increasing light output?
-
Removing it will make the sidelights work like normal. I doubt removing it will make power input greater for dip and main beam as its only used on sidelights.
The two connection wires can break off and short on the bodywork.
Bin it.....
-
Ok just took it off. Didn't make any diferance to the lights what so ever.
-
maybe its a metal tube with wires on it?
-
as above, its dim-dip resistor. the problem comes if it shorts to the chassis, more of an issue on the mk2 golf due to how wires are routed over the edge of the chassis leg which can be quite sharp. if it shorts out your headlight switch loom catches fire as there isnt a fuse
-
is this what you remove so the inner side lights go out when you have dipped on? i did try unplugging the yellow plug under air box but it made no difference, so could this resistor be knackered?
cheers
-
no it turns off the dipped beam when the sides are on, the sidelights will be on regardless of if this is plugged in or not :)
