Title: Theives nicking catalytic converters! - Sticky this pls
Post by: Martz on 22 January 2011, 20:35
Right Guys n Gals

Our childminder was in Tescos Sunbury (nr Heathrow) and had our little fella with her. The car had child seats in so what happened was heartless. She was in for 15-20 mins and canme back to the car and when it started it sounded terrible, she stopped at a garage close by and when up on the ramps it was a shock to her to say the least. The cat was missing and was butchered off. Police notified etc etc. Due to the cost of repair the vehicle 'maybe' a write off. The exaust fumes were also noticable inside the vehicle and could have caused serious problems for everyone inside including my little boy.

Be aware everyone as someone could get seriously hurt from this. Little feckers should be shot!

Please leave this post on here so that it can be viewed as it is important that everyone is aware that this is happening.

this has been talked about for a while now, not good at all, but pointless as well, but hey ho, in the time, aggro and money it takes to cut off a cat box, these morons might as well just go get a proper job!

Depends on the cat some are worth good money when scrapped don't know many jobs that would pay similar per hour unless you go into banking.
Im sorry to hear about this but if she could not hear the racket due to missing cat and have the sence to not drive it i would be worried about her child care ability

Hence why she got to the garage across the road....................

If she was in Tescos, surely they have CCTV of the car park?

What's the point in stickying this?

So if we drive off and suddenly find our cat's missing we can go 'oh so someone's nicked it while I was shopping, like in Martz thread'.

I don't see the point in stickying the post?  It sucks that this has happened, but get a claim in is all you/she can do.

What possible evasive action can we take to avoid this sort of weird theft?  What should we do if we see the theft in progress?  Go and talk to these nutters?  If you live near Heathrow it probably explains why your insurance premiums are so high.

It'd be like stickying a thread about making sure you put your handbrake on, because my car rolled off down a hill when I didn't put mine on well enough.... although let's face it - at least it's possible to do something about that problem!

Tescos have no CCTV DH.

I pay very little for my insurance my friend.........

I posted this to make people aware of this, yep, your right not much can be done about it but if you saw someone doing this would you confrontthem? I would as I believe in right and wrong and I would not be wrong for one of these low life to get a good kick in (although Pikeys normally find you and kill you!).

Cheers

pikies are the scum of the earth mate theyre not goiong to care that your cars got child seats init, theyre just concerned where the next 50 quids coming from a couple of pikies stole 3 or 4 cats off the cars on the forecort at work last year.
they must be worth a fair bit now a pikey come round last week and offered £120 per cat, dont what they sell for if thats how much they want to buy them for

No I wouldn't, I'd keep a bloody low profile and call the police - I've never been stabbed and have no interest in experiencing such an activity.

I believe in right and wrong, but I believe more in being around to watch my kids grow up and I'm not going to forfeit that for a catalytic converter!

Police do feck all. Fair point not wanting to get a kicking. The problem that i have with all this is why do we all pay our taxes, pay our premiums, teach our children to respect one another and these low life simply feel they have a right to steel from the ordinary Jo in the street. Nothing normally happens to them because we all frightened to deal with it head on (and rightly so as you mentioned). And there appears to be nothing you can do to prevent the theft?

100% agree with you nothing ever happens its the sort of thing people like us will spend hours and hours down the pub argueing how it's wrong and they shouldn't get away with it but the outcome is always the same what can we do? I reckon a couple of grenades in each site is q good idea but don't think the police or government would agree with me. Unfortunately

most vw cats are ceramic so worthless to the pikey scum.  Its vauxhalls peugeots and fords and Rovers they target mostly. we have had about 30 nicked over the last 18 months worse night they got 8 from us and 9 from the garage next door.   they use hydrulic citting gear nicked from the local fire statio we have CCTV and the police have copies of the events happening took em about 40 minutes all wearing hoodies and what have the polic done as usuall feck all. We now park car inside based on whats the cat like if its a genuine original one insde the car goes if its had a replacemetn or its a vag we leave it outside.

However first time I have heard of it i a public car park the feckers are getting brave. If it carrys on maybe the police will actually do something about it
lol

No so.  All Catalytic converters are loaded with small amounts of precious metals including platinum, palladium and rhodium.

You'll find approximately 3 to 7 grams of platinum in one.

That is why they are stolen.

Jonathan.

butchered off?? you ever tried removing one? it is a lot easier to undo the exhaust clamps and remove it. I think it was that rusty it fell off and she made up an excuse because as you say the fumes are dangerous for your child's health.

easy way to stop this if it really was stolen, is to lower the car so you can't even get a jack underneath it

This is more common over night at lorry yards as they have bigger cats. Takes something to take one from a tesco car park during the day. Sure it didn't just come off? lol

Hmmmmm a 53 plate vehicle. Unlikely rust. Deck a people carrier? Thanks for the advice, I must now go and get coilovers for my van to prevent that from attack!  :rolleyes:You must drive a Corsa with a comment like that.

£25 per cat + petrol angle grinder = loads of money.

If you lived in Mitcham near Nebbits scrap yard you will know what I mean

As Tazzy said, this has been around for a while. Apparently cats have a very small amount of gold inside and some other precious materials that the thieves accumulate and then sell for good money. In America this is a serious crime and over there it's easy peasy as most vehicles are SUV's and you don't need a jack to easily nick the cat.

No gold, platinum is why people want them, if golds like £7 a gram platinum's got to be more, so like £50 per cat.

I've heard diesels dont need them? Man at college said he took his off ages ago to sell it lol, still passes its mot etc.

Ahh that's the one, platinum.

Yeah diesels don't require cats, they do have smoke tests though and removing the cat increases the smoke put out

Yeah, but these smoke tests are very slack. My 306TD doesn't have a CAT and the amount of smoke that pumps out the back of it is insane! I mean, you don't want to stand by the exhaust when it starts up nor if I put my foot down. You will be covered in smoke! Yet it has never been mentioned on the MOT. However, seems as it is very high emissions the tax is a killer!

I always thought thats the problem in todays society no one give a fu*k and rather ignore it, kind of reminds me of the Newyorker who got mugged back in the 80's and people just standing watching it for fun!
Flip side is you could get done for GBH if it got out of hand?
Guess it depends if it was happening to your car

Yes CATS have some nice metal in them worth a bit hence a CAT could be about £800 £1000   :lipsrsealed:

Not read all this thread, but CATS getting stolen is quite a common thing with the pikeys, as is Batterys from cars or trucks, place near me had batterys stolen off 70 trucks over a weekend , something to do with a certain metal in them.

on some of he agricutural kit we secure the batterys with a coouple of welded on straps of 75mmx10mm steel,   the only way to get them out is to cut the weld off the ends so the strap can be pulled up and battery removed in normal way,   makes changing batterys a PITA but drasticly reduces need for new batterys,  as the cheepest ones we use are nearly £200 it's worth the bother esp as most kit has 2 batterys
