Hello new to the forum. spent some time fixing up a mk3 golf gti 8v. Its running like a treat! Now im thinking of the exterior.
Don't wanna go nuts on it. Some tips on mods I can do myself that aren't gonna cost the earth would be great.
just want it to look original

Lowered and an exhaust are the best places to start if you ask me.
-
I'm happy with the ole long beach alloys on mine as they're in good nic still but wheels do make a car, so a good external mod in my opinion without going silly..
I'd love some original type BBS alloys though..
-
Yup got some JOM coilovers on the way to get it lowered, hear there quite good for the price. and was looking at some new wheels. or maybe spraying the originals as in the pic posted by snifferdog. I like that.
Exhausts, what's a good one for a mk3 that's not gonna break the bank!
-
Jetex or supersprint are probably your best bet for quality.
-
Nice car! Well I would say that as it's identical to mine!
You seem to be missing a few parts though: bee sting arial and GolfGTI.co.uk stickers!
Hoe about a VR6 splitter / chin spoiler? That's what I'm going to do to mine soon.

Yeah had the aerial someone half inched the one off of my wife's mk4, guess where mine went lol. yeah was thinking about the vr6 splitter think I'll get one off ebay. good call.
As for the coilcovers, got some JOM's for £90 quid never used so i thought it would be rude not too!
How about getting rid of some of the plastic? maybe spraying the bumper or something? anyone know anything about that?
-
The bumpers/plastic work does suffer the 'fade to grey' with age..there's lots of comments on here about how to get them back to black if that's what you want, temporarilly that is or more permanent with a spray job.
-
Sparying the wheels is easy peasy and you could paint the calipers red while youre there.
Heres how I did mine -

linseed oil can work wonders on the plastics.

I was thinking of spraying them to match the rest of the body, Is that me being stupid or can it be done?
But the rest of the plastic does need a bit of love i will look in to that cheers.

Linseed oil. ok might go and grab some now see how it does cheers.
-
Boiled linseed oil..from the diy hardware store like Wickes.
It does a pretty good job and better than a lot of stuff but it does leave streaky lines when it rains and if you do the rear spoiler it'll leave the rear window with a bit of a sticky residue mess as it runs off, that's what i found anyways..
It's not bad at all though.

Painting the plastics is troublesome as they're textured to need to be smoothed first. A lot of work involved in that, so unless you're doing it yourself it is expensive in labour costs.
As far as chin spoilers go, everyone and their uncle goes for the VR6 (with good reason, they look great) but there are other options...

Venom motorsport do good prices on exhausts. I think a cat back miltek system is under £300.
Changing the grill for a debadged one, or painting the badge is another option. Or a Vento front end? Can all be got as genuine VW stuff. It's a big mod, that's stunning and isn't in your face.
Google Lamin-X, they do tints for lights and such, good simple mod.
debadge the back and de-wiper the tailgate, pressed plates, smoked or clear foglights... All can be got on ebay...

going back to first picture! how come you have three bins and i only have two? whats the brown one for? ps luv the car

Well cheers guys you've all given me lots to think about. I'll let you know how i get on i think im gonna go with yellow callipers the duckbill splitter debadge the grill, get some new lights, lower the thing a little. Then next month (when i've a bit more money) look at some exhausts. If theres some cash left over i'll do the wheelie bins lol
