Title: 16v ABF exhaust!

Hi,

The exhaust on my GTi is driving me mad. I bought it a while ago and it had been de-catted and had a hole in the middle box. Thought it would just be a simple case of repairing this, boy was I wrong!

Had a cat and mid box put on, rattled on the beam for ages until we changed the box for a different make. It no longer rattles on the beam or body but it vibrates something chronic through the floor at about 2700-3000 revs and sounds a bit rubbish at idle. The guy at the exhaust shop found the heatshield from the downpipe was loose so clamped it just before the cat. Sounds a bit better but the vibration is worse! He's gonna change the middle box again but I'm not holding out much hope. I found a thread about an engine mount being cracked causing vibration, but I'm not sure! Anyone got any experience of this or any ideas?

I had this on my 16v. it was due to me manifold flexing to much and hitting a heatshield when accelerating

Thanks for replying, any ideas what would make it better? If I remember right from my old MK2, the manifold fits to the exhaust with some flexible clips... if this is the same on the MK3, does this need replacing?

I'm guessing you've checked that it's not the heatshield that runs above the middle box? Also are all of the rubber hangers ok? Mine was doing this due to perished rubbers on the middle box bracket causing the exhaust to drop and touch one of the metal brackets that run under the exhaust.

solution take off the heat sheilding does f**k all anyways

Make sure the clamp is not catching the rear beam and also check all you engine mounts.

It will be the rubber mounts on the middle box.

I had a problem with my exhaust knocking on the rear beam after i fitted a new cat. After a few weeks of investigating it turned out the new cat was about 20mm longer than the old one and had pushed the whole exhaust back causing the knocking. I ended up getting the grinder out and cutting about 20mm off the new cat and the problem went away.

That's interesting, because I think that is what is happening - being pushed back either under acceleration or something else. The cat is a timax, so not the best I don't think! I'll add it to the list! Cheers.

Have a check that all your exhaust mounts are hanging nice and free and straight. I had a bl**dy awful resonance problem on my 'Valver and traced it to the rubber mounts at each end of the tail box being distorted in opposite directions and effectively locking each other solid. Have got most of the way to a cure by slotting the holes in the mount brackets to allow a bit of adjustment in the mount position. May yet end up fabricating a whole new bracket for the rear most one but we'll see. Might even stop it hitting the rear beam one day too... :rolleyes:
