Now I know this is a sensitive subject....
But I have the clocks from my donor car in mine, and the mileage is way off. I want the mileage to add up at the next MOT, as the last one shows about 103k, but my clocks show 217k, how dodgy is that gonna look in the cars history? I'd rather not try and find another set of clocks with specific mileage as that could take forever, so is there a way I can wind back the mileage on my current clocks?
-
Yep it can be done easy.
But I am not sure which is the best way, RJ should know.

Apparently I can wind it back on the speedo cable from the gearbox end, but isn't there a mechanism somewhere that stops it winding back when you reverse?

Don't think it will work that way.

Not being funny, but could that reply be sent in a PM Jon? Don't want people coming on here and finding out how to clock a car that easily.
I realise clocking is not the intention.

well to be fair, anyone who believes the milage in a mk2 is asking for trouble, how many are running around on the original clocks? but i can edit and send via pm if you like :)

Agreed, but why make it easier for them.

mk2's are quite easy to clock anyway but some of the more recent stuff with digital speedos is scary easy.
-
well i used to pm the info, then it ended up being posted around on ed38 anyway so i gave up

This made me lol. The ONLY way you can verify the mileage on a mk2 or ANY car for that matter is by a FSH or seeing every MOT since new. Anyone who has an ounce of common sense should be able to spot one thats done 100k more than the clocks claim, theres so many signs.
-
Even then I wouldn't trust it!
I bought one with low mileage and FSH only to discover on my way home the odometer worked intermittenly so was probably only recording less than half the real real milage for who knows how long. The MoT certs and FSH all matched up though!

It doesn't matter which car it is..it doesn't matter if its 30 years old or 1 year old....the only way you will ever know is if you bought the car from new yourself. I'm sure everyone or most people on here can stop the mileage from totting up...even if they don't know they are doing it. A simple lazy attitude to a speedo cable repair is one way to avoid mileage. Treat every car you buy as having double the miles...that way you wont be disappointed.
