Hi.
My '94 Golf GTi started ok this morning in the frost, I went to the petrol station, when I got back in car & tried to start it,
it fired up, then cut out, this happened 3 times, 4th time it started ok.
Its as if its got an immobiliser fitted, but it hasnt.
Any ideas what this may be?
Cheers in advance.

Coil on the way out? Or ECU relay?
-
Coil, ok.
But where is the ECU Relay fitted? Are they cheap?

Just have q quick check of your air inlet pipes and check your filter is not choked. Mine did it on way home from work the other week, had a look when I for home and the inlet had slipped off the throttle body where I had been havin a play a few days before
-
All the air intake pipes etc are ok. I took it all off the other week to clean T/Body.
Its been ok up until this morning.
-
That's exactly what I did but obviously didn't fit the spring clip back on properly as a week later it had worked itself loose, I didn't notice it straight away as I was looking elsewhere in the engine bay!
-
I will re-check everything again tomorrow. Cheers.
-
Throttle body maybe? I have something similar

i had this same problem on my old mk3 golf gl.
on mine it turned out to be the chip thingy in the key.
there is a sensor thingu around the ignition barel that recognises the key.
on mine i found it and moved a wire up around the barrel and it solved my problem.
on mine before i moved the wire sometimes if it didnt start i would take the key out turn it round so the chip was other way round and it would start.
-
cheers, but i dont hink mine has got a chipped key or an imobillisor.
-
does it carry on running if you hold the throttle open? if so it could be the isv. if not i'd be looking at hall sensor in dizzy or the coil
-
cheers. i will have a look at weekend

What year is it? If it's after 1994 it'll have the immobilizer chip.
And just because the coil gives a spark, doesn't mean it's not faulty. The spark has to be strong, a weak spark won't get the car going as it should.

afaik its usually post-96 in the uk that were immobilised, but there could be exceptions to the rule as there usually is when year cutoff dates are involved. easy way yo tell check for the reader coil round the ignition lock, or give me the ecu part number :)
-
its a '94. it doesnt look like theres a chip in key. it only cuts out when cold, and when 'choke' is still on. mainly first thing in morning.

Hi mate, just a thought about your "cutting out" problem. There is a sticky thread under title "All Mk3 Owners Look Here",which covers the whole issue off cutting out and poor starting problems with the Mk3.
Good Luck.
