Ok so basically I thought it was the alternator making a horrible whining noise whenever the car is running. I've just found out from my mechanic that it's actually the aircon pump, now I've seen the prices for a new one & I can't warrant spending that kind of money at the moment.
So could I get a smaller belt for a non-aircon Golf MK4 & bypass the aircon for the time being?

Yes that will work fine.
Has the system got gas in or has it had a top up not long ago it might be they did not put any compressor oil in.

It's not been gassed since I bought it a year ago.
I was going to get it regassed but to be honest I never use it, even in the hot summer last year I found opening the windows better!!
Cheers for the quick reply, is much appricated!

I'm so slow with my replies!! It's taken me ages to get round to sorting the problem out.
I got hold of a belt but the mechanic couldn't get it to fit, something to do with the steering pump.
So I think I'll do your idea first & get it regassed!!! Am praying it makes the noise stop, getting rather annoying.

Fingers crossed as a new pump will set you back a LOT :lipsrsealed:
