Title: Mk3 Golf 8v to Diesel
Post by: tdi_blu on 17 January 2011, 09:41
Im thinking of maybe at some point going  deisel Mk4 gt-tdi or a passat estate tdi wouldnt really be till later in the year. Now im not saying Im going to do a conversion just curious really how much work would be involved and what would be the best engine for the job or is it way to much work and really not worth the effort.I know deisel engines arent cheap etc and my mk3 isnt worth a lot but if I did have the spare money and it could be done within a budget maybe an option thanks.

It can be done, have seen a few mk2's converted.

However the TDI lump is only 90bhp and could be modded to give more, the later PD spec engines are a ball ache to get in and working, would be a shame to mess up an Anni to be honest.

i looked at tdi before getting a gti
with £2k you can go from 90hp to about 250bhp

Only £2k , with shopping around you could fit a 1.8t for less.

well true and it was £2k with an audi, imi sure could source cheaper vw parts.
250bhp, 350lbft torque and still like 40ish mpg!

Yes the torque will be higher but you will not see 40mpg due to the amount of fuel you will need to dump in.

So to answer my question say you get 250bhp out of it what mpg will you get.

to answer your question id still prob see 26mpg which is only when i hit boost as the engines performance is geared to 100bgp normally unless on boost, 26 is more than you boys get

What mods can be done to a TDI tho?

I've got airfilter and middle box removed? - Rev's more freely!

My 204bhp 330d easily gave 55mpg.

If you drove it sensibly it gave great mpg but when you booted it it dropped for obvious reasons.

The 320d gave 45mpg when driven sensibly, with only 150bhp because the engine had to work harder.

At 70mph the 330d would do about 1,600rpm whereas the 320 would do about 2,300rpm.

Modern diesels / common rail are a whole different ball game, to get power out of older diesels will cost mpg as you need to burn more fuel.

Think ill be going tdi for sure with my next car with the way petrols going up just getting really expensive. My 8v when I fill the tank use to be under £50 now its £56 why I was curious about a tdi conversion but I think in the long run im better off just buying a deisel one of the reasons I moved back from a VR to a 8v tbh.

The mk3 tdi isn't actually too slow as standard.

Just a shame about the tractor chugging idle and smokey acceleration!

Also... For some reason they give you biscuit wheels and standard brakes.

Might not be such a problem for the tdi hatchbacks but they're good enough for my estate.
