It's about time we started working on the welcome post for the MK6 section.
Suggestions please
Spam is expected of course
-
Snoops and Doc, please can you stop moving the silly threads to the general section as it's encouraging all the forum super-posters in here with their expertise in saying nothing yet complaining about everything. Just delete the crap threads when they're a couple of days old and time expired, don't air our dirty linen in public please
-
I thought Eastenders was exciting........ anyone got any Butterscotch flavour
Dont let this place vacate just like the mk5 section did Guy and Wayne. Best thing is just worry about your own sections and just let snoopy and Doc run this section..
A Happy place rolls in more new users. Bickering sends people away :embarassed:

They just keep going and don't get old as they keep getting posted on by you lot
Its why i moved them.
If i delete it starts a public outcry  .
This thread im leaving its upto DOC/global mods to decide what he/they wants to do with this one.
I happen to agree here.
I have no issue with threads going off topic, but blatent silly threads have a better place to go.
The Mk6 section should be a resource for the Mk6 platform...not a light entertainment section for the sake of it, those sections already exist...I know because I use them!
Face it though, nearly all the silly threads in this section are the off topic bits from sensible threads moved by the mods and indeed they're doing a sterling job. We all get sucked into a bit of banter at times and laughter is good for you. I just feel that the real crap should be deleted after a couple of days when it's run its course. Not inviting all the clique from other sections in here to join in the mk6 owner bashing. It gets like a fortress in here at times.
There are just as many individuals who run the clique in the off topic section as there are who are mk6 centric in here. That's just life, we deal with it, most of us use the general section to read and post on general subjects but there's no reason we can't form a bit of a bond with fellow mk6 owners and interested parties within the relevant section. Too much seriousness would result in such a dull forum section and too many keyboard warriors only arrive in this section to rabble raise.
This is true DOC likes his cut and paste feature i like my delete, move, lock ones
But the problem i noticed this morning was the forum was really starting to fill with nonsence cuttings/offtopic. So i moved them. The problem is they kept getting boosted to the top. They were mostly all heading the same way so i moved them right or wrongly.
Most people don't realise i joined this forum back in 2005 and read it before that. What put me off posting or joining in daily was the so called banter between people. If you read alot of it as an outsider you think they are attacking people.
Banters fine, thats why i like that other mk5 forum. Infact Am1W reminds me of RedRobin and our days on Tyresmoke but its the kind of banter im more concerned with and the path alot of threads end up going down.
-
Simple fact of the matter is the Mk6 section hasn't been moderated properly in the past, hence the free-for-all. Now we have a mod team, it's going to take some time to change how people use it.
But I echo what's been said above - restrict the section more towards the subject of the cars and ownership. Nothing wrong with a bit of banter but off-topic is for off-topic. In the last 12 months or so it has become difficult to find some of the useful Mk6 info in amongst all the BS.
-
I was one of the ones calling for a mk6 mod from the start after the original pitch battles. Eventually FroGTI got the poison chalice and gave up shortly afterwards thanks to some of the sh!te he got. I stopped using the forum much for some time then the general mods decided they could cope with it and nothing really happened. Thankfully Snoopy and Doc were brought in and have a task on their agenda and are doing a great job. They have both taken the right track in gently bringing the ship around rather than trying a handbrake turn (would be such good fun if you could do that to a real ship!!).
One of the reasons this forum section is so active is because of the banter. StevePs mk6 forum has been all serious and is sadly neglected where as his mk5 forum is thriving. The banter keeps forums alive, the mods have the job of drawing the line.
If you want hardcore mk6 Golf stuff there's always golfmk6.com if you can put up with wealthy American college kids style of banter.
-
Feck in 'ell
I like banter....but I don't like off topic when it's WILDLY off topic so..... I split up wildly off topic so we can have a laugh and still keep the original topic on topic. I think it's good to keep the banter around until it dies out as that's part of the flow of our community.
This topic is about making everybody that visits here WELCOME, it's not a debate over it's existence but about people helping build it's content which, in itself helps build our community.
I love this forum and I'm loving being a rudder of this section, we all know it will take a while for everything to settle down following the introduction of moderators but it's all good
Thanks for the feedback, seems most are happy :-)
This has gone WAY off topic, any suggestions for the name of the new topic when I split it up?
-
In general, especially some of the threads of late, Its funny the way i read this forum sometimes i can really understand why the mk5 guys left and set up another forum. A great one at that imo. I prob spend as much time over there as on here.
-
How about just delete every post in here (this one included) and make a sticky saying welcome to the mk6 SECTION, lay a few ground rules down, I.E. try to keep topics on topic, use the search function before posting, enjoy yourselves.
Then lock it. That way people that want to introduce themselves will (either in here or in the more relevant welcome section) and there is no bickering.
Simple questions = Simple solutions.

If everyone used the search function before posting nothing much would get posted on here as 90% of the topics have been discussed before.
Would end up being as quiet as the mk2 section!
Tried to start a topic about what to look out for when buying a mk2 and all I got was "try using the search function"
-
In here the search function would have a limited effect granted. However, it is worth having a look before you post.
*Off topic - In the mk2 section you are talking about a 25 year old car, of course that topic is going to have been covered a million times before, in every iteration, with all points covered, so another topic (to add to the 20+ exisitng ones is going to be pointless) a little effort gets you a long way.
Edit: Here you go... Just for you. http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=178757.0

Thanks Slick, "How about just delete every post in here (this one included) and make a sticky saying welcome to the mk6 SECTION, lay a few ground rules down, I.E. try to keep topics on topic, use the search function before posting, enjoy yourselves."

What we have so far:
Welcome to the mk6 section, most of the posters are fairly sane and rational human beings but beware the trolls who hail from the bowels of the 'classic' Golf sections.
Please excuse the following members: Kev who will likely call you a poof if you drive a Diesel or an automatic and Asker who will drag you so far off topic you'll forget why you're here.
You may want to add a few more cautions.....
"Welcome to the Mk6 section. Whether you have a GTI, GTD, another Mk6, a Golf of any vintage or just a passing interest in VW's, we're happy to hear from you. Even if you just like cars or driving I'm sure your contribution will be met with positivity and enthusiasm. Hell, if you have no interest at all in cars and want to talk about your holiday, flower arranging or sexual preferences we'd be happy to listen - we have moderators to clear that sh*t up. Oh and we don't mind swearing either. Enjoy!"
''You are now in the mk6 forum, tread carefully or clear off''

Or, this really short one:
Welcome to the Mk6 Golf (GTI) forum for all things Mk6 Golf, where our friendly, helpful, humorous and proficient members and experts will be happy to help you with all your motoring needs.
Will this be a sticky?
Maybe a thread headed 'Newbie's, say Hello and introduce yourself to the regular crowd' etc etc....?
This could save many other newbie threads being posted dispersing other threads...?
-
I do wish you'd stop cutting threads to pieces doc! My brain hurts! :undecided:

A very warm welcome to the Golf Mk6 (GTI) forum for all things Mk6 Golf.
Doc, can I ask you about the points in bold please, why you don't want other members in this section also since when did this become the mk6 or Golf mk6 forum
-
Well two of those points raised in bold are from me. And as I've said in here and numerous other threads I didn't take this thread seriously. I thought it was a joke thread put up to wind up the WUMs who drip by here and spout bile from time to time.
So you can disregard all of my posts in this thread, they were just put up as a joke when the thread first went 'live'.
I'd have deleted them myeslf by now if they hadn't been quoted, thus rendering them still there.
We've all had our laugh, now it's all getting a bit weary. Akser, Gilly and p3ssa have deleted some of their messing about so can we just bury it now.
-
Start off something like this if you so wish:
Hello and Welcome Mk6 Golfers. Here you can learn about all things for the latest (or you can use the word 'current') Golf.............................
-
Welcome to the mk6 section, most of the posters are fairly sane and rational human beings but beware the trolls who hail from the bowels of the 'classic' Golf sections.
You are now in the mk6 area of the forum, tread carefully or clear off''
A very warm welcome to the Golf Mk6 (GTI) area of the forum for all things Mk6 Golf.
Doc, can I ask you about the points in bold please, why you don't want other members in this section also since when did this become the mk6 or Golf mk6 forum
I like the fact that the MK6ers see this area of the forum as their own as that's what it is, their own section of the forum written in the most part by the MK6 members.
Regarding the "MK6 forum" your nit picking a over small a moot point as every time I write anything to do with the "MK6 section of the forum" it is indeed referred to as the "Mk6 section of the forum" common sense must dictate that I'll carry on calling it the "MK6 section of the forum"
I want all Mk6ers to inhabit every part of the entire forum and welcome people from other parts of the forum, as I do with open arms
Please fill your glass to half full and re-read for maximum effect.
