Title: Advice on Buying a VR6 & puttin wide alloys
Post by: YoungLad With VR6 on 22 February 2005, 17:33
Hi there i am new to this forum. Anyhow i am purchasing a Golf Mk3 VR6 3 door on a K plate(93) with full vw history, 79 on the clock. I've seen the car and it seemed immaculant. How much do you think the car is worth ? as i am picking it up for ?2100, is that a decent price ?

Also one more thing, i wanted to find out how wide alloys can i put on the car (deep dish type), and what tyres i would require? (click links below) without doin no work to the arches or suspension if possible.

Hi there, welcome to the forum.

2k sounds like a pretty good price for a K reg VR6 with that sort of mileage if it's straight.  Definately get an HPi check and try and verify the mileage from any old mots or service invoices (service books can be forged as easily as cars can be clocked).  One thing to watch for on early VR6s is the head gasket was a bit weak until they changed it for a better one in about '95.  Try and find out if your's has been changed if not then don't be suprised if it doesn't last much longer.

As for the wheels i think you could get fairly wide wheels without arch work as long as they are 16" or less, 17" i think you might strugle.

Check out www.vr6oc.co.uk (http://www.vr6oc.co.uk) for people with much, much more knowledge than i have.

Good luck and i hope you enjoy VR6 ownership!

Early vr6 headgaskets are weak between no.1 cylinder and the water jacket.

Thanx for the advice everyone and the warm welcome. I've got a hpi check and its all clear and i checked the milliege with service history, the documents you get from vw when you put it in for service, looks all good in that sense. The sound of the head gasket going is a worrying one, how much would that cost to get repaired? :undecided: If the head gasket hasn't been changed how much would that cost if you know etc?

thanks for the help again?
