I've not had paint come off of mine but my handle is in a similar state. I did a search on it and it seems to be a fairly common problem.

Yep, I remember about 16 years ago I was working for a mate valeting cars. I jet washed a Polo and the whole side of red paint came off. I pooped myself! Was poor quality paint so I was told at the time.

f**k :( aw man!! :( how much do you think it would be to get this sorted? would hole tailgate need doing?
-
You could have a go with rattle cans, feather the edge with 400w/d then a little bit of primer, paint then lacquer, probably cost you £30ish from Halfords... a Bodyshop would price it at around £280ish+vat

Looks like the rust had a role to play, but the lesson is not to go mental with the power washer! I only use it at full power on the wheels, never on the paint or body - I learnt that lesson after I removed bits of the vinyl boot sticker on my last MK2.
You're only wetting/rinsing the car with the power washer, not cleaning it. If you want to get more dirt off before washing it, then invest in a snow foam lance.
