Title: Has anybody ever noticed?
Post by: Judderi on 22 February 2005, 14:01
Has anybody ever noticed that on the rear pillar behind the window the line is faded out on one side and solid on the other. Why is this?

It looks like the line is solid on the Passenger side, and faded on the Drivers side.

The solid swage line will add strength into the drivers side, as would the filler cap recess.

Surely a line in the pannel is not for strength

A swage line in the panel will add strength. That probably isn't the reason it is there on this panel on the mk2 though.

It could be for a number of reasons, its most probably there for aesthetics, but could also be to reduce the chance of the panel rippling. (The swage will add rigidity).

On a 3 door car, the rear quarter panel is very large.

Yes you will have the line on both sides but look closer and you will see that the line on one side fades away when the other is solid all the way across. As far as i know this is the case on all mk2's, well it is on all the ones i have looked at or owned.

  Ooooooo dangerous you might take away the strength of the rear pannel and the whole car will fall apart.

I'll have a rear strut brace to help that.
