Title: WTF is this normal?
Post by: stainesy on 15 January 2011, 14:04
ok i was just under my car fiddling around as you do. and i noticed the gearbox.
i can see what i think is the flywheel spinning.
the gearbox looks like its way bigger than the engine where its ment to be bolted and i can see inside at the flywheel spinning.

look at the pics is this normal?

Im amazed your clutch is still working and hasn't become contaminated with it open like that. What's the actual gearing like?

If its been ok then Id leave it until it eventually/inevitably gives up.

Mine is kinda like that. Because the 8v sump doesn't allow the plate on the 02A gearbox to fit, I just run it with the flywheel showing.

However when the car was VERY low, I managed to rip some of the box off

02A is from VR6 or 16v, I think the TDI has it too.

Yours is not an 02A as I can see a clutch release arm, meaning it's cable operated (02A is hydraulic).
Not sure what box you've got, possibly from a corrado 16v? Not sure if it's an 020.

Pretty sure its normal, fitting wise, but there should be a plate which sits over the gap to protect the flywheel

yep as above, need tin metal plate. found on mk2s as well as mk3s.

khare: you need the ABF alloy bracket, or an 02a tin shield from corrado or passat. though it wont help you now

I had the ABF alloy bracket but it wouldn't fit over the steel sump bulge. I remember you saying the tin shield from a rado or passat would fit, but it's not caused any problems at all so I'm not really bothered about having it or not
