As the title really, my 8v is stuck in third gear, no linkages missing or snapped. The gearstick wont move out of the third gear position.
What I really want to know is, is it new gearbox time?
-
Not neccessarrily, a long time ago on my old gearbox the same thing happened when I left it parked up for 3 weeks on an incline.
I had to pop off the linkages, then give the lever a few swift hits with a hammer to free it up.
Incidentally, I only replaced the gearbox because there was a few teeth missing off reverse!
-
Thanks, but this happened whilst driving last night, now i have tried forcing the linkages to move by hand and allthough they will wobble as if they want to move, they just wont move out of there current positions
-
By any chance have any of the 3x bolts worked loose from the bracket that holds the linkage mech to the PAS rack? Sounds like something has come loose elsewhere which instead of being sat straight is at an angle putting pressure on the linkage as a whole.
Pop the plastic linkages off, then put the gearbox back in neutral manually. Then check over the rest of the rod/linkage etc. for slop/missing bushes/worn bushes.

is not PAS, ill check over the linkages later on, I've left the car at a workshop and come home to calm down. Its one thing after another with this effing car!
cheers dude

Yer there awsome beast's arent they :lipsrsealed:

try rocking the car whilst trying to get it out of gear or rolling, get the gearbox cogs turning.
-
I have had this happen twice with my MK 2.
Check the level of oil in the gear box, both times with me the level was low, putting more oil in rectified the problem.
Hope this helps

What he said, I had similar problem once, did a motorway drive, took my exit and the damn thing was stuck in 5th.. With rage I got it out, next day was a bit better but all gears were stiff, drove it to work then gearbox went.

sounds to me liek it's overselected.
you can try hitting it but other than that it gearbox to bits or replace

for future search results, I will let you all know that yeh its goosed no amount of hammering and swearing would get the selector rods to move. New box time!
