Title: MK4 GTI T starting problems PLEASE HELP
Post by: brucie23 on 14 January 2011, 15:10
Hi people

I have a mark4 GTI T GOLF (2000)

I did a bit of traviling for 6 months and the car was parked up for this peroid of time as i didnt have the heart to sell her (shes my baby ;) )

When i came back i tryed starting her but the battery was stone dead.I re-charged the battery and connected it again and still wont start.when i turn the key i can hear (what i think is the fuel pump starting) its like a buzzing sound for about 10secs.Then when i try to start she trys toturn over for about 5secs and dies again.

I have put the multi-meter on the battery and getting about 11.6v...On the possitive of the battery and the connector block on top of the battery and down to the starter motor.I dont know where else to test as i dont know very much about cars.

Would it be the starter motor has packed it in?? i have tryed tapping it to see if it would free up but no luck.

If it helps i had my dads VR6 hooked up with jump leads and when we tryed jumping there was no sound differance coming from the VR6 (if that makes sense) But she started after 15mins or so and i kept her connected for 20mins but died again and hasnt started sence.
If anyone has any ideas i would much aprechate it......Thanks very much for taken your time to read this..

What volatge you getting when it's running mate? I would check for ignition, you know plugs, coil packs, alternator, etc etc! Change the oil if it's been sat there for 6 months too

I would replace the battery as a 1st step.
