Title: Just an observation on the Mk6 section...
Post by: AGB on 10 January 2011, 23:20
I was just browsing through the other model specific areas and reading the top line threads, you see subjects like 'Valve Bearing', 'Exhaust' and 'Turbo'.

You wander into the Mk6 section and everyone is talking about how they feel about their cars, two members are battering each other with their handbags and there are more polls than in the average issue of Cosmo. I think the other forum members are scared to visit in case they're forced to talk about their relationship with their car.

First person to mention their car's star sign is in real trouble....

Hi A:
Kev and moi are into V&W. Handbags are so last Tuesday. It was a good coming home party for him.
My car does not have a star sign even though it was born 1st week March 2010. So there.

I wasn't pointing fingers and no names were mentioned. If you want to spend your birthday playing with handbags, you go right ahead.

I'll pass on the bags, but I'll go right, ahead of the lights. And they are not Xenons and probably will never be.

I'll would love to have a peek at yours when you get it done, that is if it's not too much trouble.

The other sections would have been like that when the cars were newer, granted the first few Golf chassis types were slightly before the internet was here but you get my drift.
Different types of buyers haunt the forums. The mk1,2,3 & 4 boys and girls are well out of warranty and busy repairing and modifying, the mk5 boys and girls are over on StevePs forum owing to the type of thing that happens in here from time to time getting a bit out of hand once or twice. The mk6 is the newest car and still current, thus attracting a great variety of owner types. Some of whom fall deeply and passionately in love with their car because it's new and shiny, then in a couple of years you won't hear from them again as they've decided it's a bit out of date and a newer model is required, then you get the next generation of owners who buy the second hand mk6 a few years into its life and nearly out of warranty who are itching to 'personalise' their motor, and so it goes on....

............in a few years time many of our number will have moved on and the section will be very very different.

I think the polls reflect the time of year, it's cold, wet and or snowy and most of us are indoors and a bit bored, so all sorts of crap ends up being posted up in an attempt at having a laugh and maybe learning a little about each other and our overpriced shopping cars. You can tell this by the amount of non regulars dropping by mid-week and not just when they're suffering hangovers at weekends. Even Nosher/Washer/Porter has made a few sensible type comments and that really is deeply troubling.......

I'm not sure about other sections, but the mk6 section was here before the mk6 GTI was out. Granted there were a few spotted here and there very early, but the majority of us were all having friendly chats and banter well before we got our cars. We were all on good terms even before then so in this section I'm sure i can safely say that for the majority of us. I think that has made us easy going, and pretty friendly because before we had our cars there was not much else we had to talk about, so because of this our range of topics not only covers the cars but the more 'chatty' type topics too. Plus were all stinking rich and dont deal with the mk1-5 rif-raff.

I totally agree, my post was just a little recreational boredom precipitated by indoor confinement.

The contrast between the areas just tickled me in that we were talking about how we felt about our cars in the absence of any serious problems. I was just dangling a carrot for a bit of banter (Sorry Doc if this means lots of housekeeping).

Mine's a Gemini by the way...

I'm debating whether I'll do the light change now, if there was a guarantee that it would work and it was a little more on top of the stock price, it would be more tempting but it feels like it's going to be way in excess but I'm going to have a chat with SteveP and see what he thinks and whether it's possible.

I don't want to end up in a situation where the car gets stripped and then we find that I don't have the correct ECM module or what have you. Steve seemed fairly pessimistic in another thread.

You do yours first and I'll watch the panto unfold. I think this is one carrot I won't bite on for sometime.

So I'll be the guinea pig huh? I insist on being chivalrous and allowing you to go first, consider it a belated birthday present.

PS. If there are any problems, do let me know...

Chivalrous? Bloody cheek. I'm no lady.

Beauty before age. I insist. I'll mind your non-LED rear.

Okay boys, rather than you two fight it out over who's going to have the biggest headache first, I'll volunteer my car to be the first to go forward and have it's eyes transplanted into bionic xenon ones. However there is a condition to this: You lot have got to have a whip round first to buy me the bits!!!
It's not such a bad deal for you as you think as mine's an early 09 and thus one of the first GTIs built in RHD. So therefore if there are any likely problems anybody could have it's gonna happen to my car first and worst.
Once my car is sorted out it will be plain sailing for everyone else..... :smug:

Offer declined for major surgical and economic reasons.
AGB's car is the same as mine (kiss, kiss), he's desperate now for contact lenses and false eye lashes, even though he drives in well lit London town. He thinks his handbag will be stolen due to lack of illumination. He worries me sometimes.

Yeah, I'm ripping out the back of my house this year to expand my kitchen and it's going to cost me a GTI and then some so I thought I'd treat myself but I'll end up taking a slice out of the building project contingency fund at the price it'll come out at with all options. It's ridiculous, I was actually content with my order and had rationalised my lack of need for xenons at purchase as a bit of a waste given where I use the car 90% of the time. It's not like the halogens are bad, I remember the '72 Merc I had, that had having two candles behind glass. Then I came on the forum and before long I had a shopping list of mods. Incorrigible, the lot of you.  Actually, based on the speed I get to do most of the time, if that logic held, I should have bought a golf cart. I'd be legal to get on the pavement. I think.

Our cars are similar but you picked the thing in a girly colour so don't give me grief about my handbag otherwise I'll start calling you J-Lo because of your bumper fetish...

A,
Your Royal Butchness.
What is the colour of your handbag?
You give no information in your signature or post any pictures on the sickey. Tut, tut.
If red is a girly colour to you , I dread to think what colour you consider masculine.

My handbag is black as is my car.

I posted a picture in the general new joiners section when I joined as is customary. I can post it up in the Mk6 section if you like?

FYI I'm going to be the test pilot, just pm'd Steve to buy his non-fairy light xenons.

Wish me luck I think I'll have a long week ahead of me

Awesome Doc, let me know how it goes and of course, good luck. I think the fairy lights are the problem because they're too new and required the new control module.
