Title: 8v Lovers.
Post by: Andy P on 10 January 2011, 21:09
What 8v's have you got and in what?

What have you had done?

What power and torque have you got out of them?

Some seem to be able to get a fair bit of power out of them and some dont make power from what has been done?

I have a mk4 Golf 2.0 8v. I've had it a couple of weeks, done nothing and got nothing.

Does this post help?

I'm pretty sure this is the first 8v car I have owned. Not bad considering this is my 10th.

What mods have you seen others do?

much has been said on this here...
general feeling is not to spend money on the engine for relatively small gains.
people do conversion....
personally I decat d and put on a k+n
stopped there.
now conversion in mind!
so I might put my low mileage 8v lump up on here and then get sum proper gains

The TDI's have lots of torque and can be remapped for more power, that would be my choice.

You can do a lot to a 8v but it is all down to how deep your pockets are at the end of the day.

Bought a mk3 8v just before Xmas. It's lowered has 17's and a pipercross induction kit. I need to service it and give it a damn good thrashing to blow the cobwebs out, the zorst needs replacing so may well bang on a stainless system off eBay but that will be it. Really want a mk 6 gttdi but probably not gonna happen lol

I got a mk2 8v. 2.0l bottom end from a mk3, 1.8 ported polished head, drilled box. Looking to put 4-2-1 manifold and stainless exhaust system if i find one for a decent price, and poly bushes all round next.

Any difference in HP?
How about the mileage?
Let me get this straight: you have a 2.0 mk3 engine and a 1.8mk2 head? is that posible?

Yes its a common mod. pretty much a straight swap with a bit of ditributor gear swapping and breather blanking etc involved. Done properly you can see 150bhp and a fair bit more torque. Start gas flowing and port matching, cam, exhaust and breathing mods will show you 170bhp ish, maybe a bit more. Im heading all that way myself with a few extra tweeks hoping for an overly optomistic 200 bhp target. Its a big experiment but I will see how it turns out lol

100 bhp/ltr  with an 8 valve has been done ( even with counterflow heads but crossflow dose it easyer )

you need

fully forged bottom end,  and bloody ell balanced.
fandango big end and main bearings.

a serious cyl head,  massive valves, amazing portwork, lightweight titanium valve gear,  very stiff valve springs and a 300+ degree cam  and custom made tuned length tubular manifold

a bloody good set of direct to head throttel bodys with standoff injectors and a fancy ecu.

or boost or no2  both are much cheeper  or do the sensible thing if gouing for those numbes NA and use a 16v or 20v

Well first of all I will be balancing the whole engine, porting, polishing, bigger valves with internal strengthening. Exhaust has been made. Engine is currently 2 litre but Im kicking the ball around about whether to go to 2.1 or not. Im also in a big debate about the fueling method to be used.. my co builder loves carbs and wants to go that way but I am yet to be convinced! As its a bit of a track day experiment, it may evolve several times and eventually we will fit a 20v motor. Interesting to see what 2 blokes can squeeze out of an 8v lump tho.. which is what its all about for us :D

I would not go 2.1 as it limits the revs.
