Snap! Mine has just started doing this to and become even more prominent on my journey home from work this evening. I also noticed that there seems to be a grinding noise coming from the n/s/r brake. Like you've just mentioned Wayne, it seems as if the ABS is now cutting in too early, why would this happen all of a sudden other than a warped disc?
-
I had this a little while back. My ABS light would come on randomly but, while the system was technically working (light off), the ABS was cutting in far too early, especially at low speeds. A dodgy sensor was eventually found but I've had that before and that normally just kills the system until it's fixed. On this occasion though, it was also found that the brake pads were well past their prime (in fact they were utterly shagged, really should've spotted it earlier :embarassed:) Now it may be coincidence and I'm not sure if it's technically possible for excessive pad wear to baffle the ABS but it might be something to check.

I haven't had any issues with the warning light coming on and it definitely works as it was changing last month when i fitted the 2 new front ABS sensors. Excessive pad wear would kinda add up in my case though as like i say, ive just acquired a rather lovely grinding noise.
-
so do you reckon its the abs sensor then? i when i done a search the thread i found said its usually caused by a seized/stiff caliper
-
could be but more than likely a warped disk thats what iv had before tbh a seized caliper would make the car pull to one side as apposed to giving a juddering feeling
-
Would I not feel chatter thru the steering wheel if it was a warped disk tho? Also if it was an ABS sensor would the abs light flash on
-
ABS is a distinct feeling.
On my old car, a rear shock was totally shot, that was enough to make the ABS kick in early

My passat has an abs sensor issue which pulses through the pedal at low speeds but no abs ligh shows and it also has no fault codes! (check the abs thread in the maintenence section as that also shows how to test resistance)
also a seized caliper can make the abs act up (I had a seizing caliper on my gti and this made the abs light come on now and then but it didnt pulse)
-
Hmmm...well im gonna have a look at them at the weekend so fingers crossed it's just a case of new pads and maybe discs. As you say with your Passat, ive also got no illuminated ABS light or fault codes showing.

If you've got any serious level of disc warpage then yes, you would definitely feel it it through the wheel.
