Title: MK6 Owners: What options would you change?
Post by: Exonian on 10 January 2011, 14:46
We've had quite a few threads on here with new members asking what they should order which invariably end up in an argument about whether DSG is the future of humanity or whether Carbon Grey looks like it's a white car covered in road salt etc. etc.

So now here's looking backward. The mk6 has been around a couple of years, the oldest GTIs are over a year and a half old and the oldest GTDs are not far behind.

What would you have done differently?

Personally, for those members that weren't around nearly two years ago, I went for as basic a spec as I could find. I knew most things I wanted could be cheaply retro fitted and then sold on again when I moved on to another car. The reason behind this is that I rarely keep a car for much more than a year to 18 months. Very few factory options are worth much come part ex time from experience depending of course on how old the car is.
Looking back, the only things I wish I'd have gone for were the 18'' Shadows (I deliberately went for a car with 17'' wheels as I had a set of 18'' BBSs that had cost me a heap and I wanted to keep them on my car. As it turned out I was never happy with the look of them on the mk6, yet they looked the dogs on the mk5  )
And maybe Xenons, very expensive to retro fit and the standard headlights are terrible on dark country roads. Not that I drive on those roads very often as I get a nosebleed when I leave the city limits, but when I do; boy do I notice it!

All other options I could take or leave, and I'm not that bothered about the car's colour either truth be known....

I specified the options on my car perfectly, even as far as Xenons are concerned, for if I had bought them at the time they would be old hat now.

So I am sitting pretty. :smug:

Maybe you pair should add to the topic by saying you wish the GTI came in pink and you wish you bought fluffy dice.

It would have to be Xenons on mine  otherwise i'm happy with my spec!!

Post by: The Doc on 10 January 2011, 18:10
I bought the highest spec GTD I could find.

Next time I'd spec:

Xenons
Cruise
CD500 thingy (then change it for my 500 Nav)
Reverse cam
Dynaudio
Bluetooth

I'd give the ACC a miss, other than that I'd do it all again.

Also should have got Luxury pack rather than Convenience Pack, but otherwise I'm very happy with it.

and if the budget allows, will get an R next time.

Think I would add DAB radio and xenons, but it's no big deal and the car is wonderful.

I definatly wish I had the Xenons on mine.....  That's what happens when you buy a car and then discover theres a GTI forum full of information and advice afterwards!

As some of you have pointed out, you wouldn't have minded a sunroof. Well I have a sunroof on mine and with much smugness I can confirm its one of my favoutite features on the car. It breaks up the roof on the GTI very nicely and is tinted to perfection to match the rear windows.

The only other thing I would change on mine is those bloody cherry rear lights for the LED type. But as I've got a service and new tyres to pay out for soon this retrofit is on the list of things to do at the moment

With regard to a Golf R?? Ummmm.... yes I would have liked a Golf R in hindsight. But my bank manager (and the wife) would have prefered not!

NO OFFENCE but
I always knew that if you're purchasing a new model then leave it a year or two to get the updated one, in our case the GTi with the rear LED's etc !

One option I wish I went for is the ACC, as driving 65 miles a day (mainly A or M roads) on a stiff suspension can get tiresome !
Title: Re: MK6 Owners: What options would you change?

Bought mine 2nd hand, most important for me was a 5 door DSG.

Camera, shadows and RCD 510 were added bonus.

Would have been happy without leather but bluetooth, cruise, xenons, nav, ACC & DAB would have been nice but you can't have everything!

And no offence taken.... Your spot on mate regarding waiting a year or two with regard to update models. I would do that next time. However LED's are a fairly new thing on all makes and models of cars and tbo I didn't evenm think of them when I brought the car. Oh well at least the rears are fairly upgradable.

I guess most of us are pretty happy with the spec of our cars but it is great to have the services of certain technically minded people on the forum like Darren and Steve, Doc and Snoops etc who have given their time and incredible knowledge to enable some of us to have retrofitted kit which would have cost a fortune through the dealers.

Thanks guys you are the best.

I'm pretty happy with the spec of mine and probably got a bit too carried away if I'm honest.  She's definitely a keeper for a few years.

I'd love a sunroof and 18 inch wheels if money had been no object. Also my Garmin with the ugly wire going down to the cigar lighter is annoying me much more on the mk6 than it ever did on my mk5 for some strange reason!!

RNS510 no need for wires then, great piece of equipment.

This thread is going on/off topic like mad  :undecided:

ACC (with state of roads)

Parking sensors (that front and rear shape can be a pain to judge)

If my dealer had understood simple English Instructions i would have had 5 other options added to my order as compensation for been messed about. VW helped me out by getting the sunroof added at the very very last minute after 3 months of the dealer messing me about even after VW said it was ok to add extra options due to production delay and VW thought it was "actually a great idea" :lipsrsealed:

I changed the RCD310 to a RCD510 as the RCD310 looked awful and did not have the functionality I wanted, the blue lighting simply did not fit in the cabin.

ACC should be standard on the GTI - it is fantastic.

I think bluefin (or any decent official remap) should be a dealer option.

I think winter tyres should be a dealer option.

ACC (with state of roads)
Parking sensors (that front and rear shape can be a pain to judge)

I think these are essential and I'm glad I specced both these.

There are many who extol the virtues of the rear camera. I'm not so sure. It is a nice gimmick though absolutely essential if you don't have rear sensors. The rear camera does not give a view if the rear wheels are going to be kerbed, does it? And, anyway, with the front and rear sensors, the RNS screen gives a clear picture of distances, front and rear in addition to its audible warning.

However, this did not prevent me from damaging my rear bumper as I stubbornly refused to look and listen to the sensors and take note.

I think the main problem is that the Golf has one lousy reverse light which is even less effective on the LED rears. A Bic lighter will give more light. The kerb or road to the rear of the car is not lit at all.

Bad design.

Hope you're feeling better Asker. Happy belated birthday.

If you find the reverse light output inadequate just touch the brake pedal while reversing and this gives you all the light you will need.

Is the LED light reverse not very good??

Thank you my friend for the greeting.

The reverse light from the LED rear is worse than useless. However, I have started doing what you suggest. Crazy for a £30,000 car, don't you think?

I really cannot fathom it out.

There are too many people around with an axe to grind. They might be unhappy, angry, naturally horrible, or whatever. I really don't care. You may want to feel sorry for them and/or then ignore them completely. Basically, they are not in my consideration.

I am awaiting (17 weeks) a build date for a GTD with DSG.  I opted for park assist.  I didn't go for the rear view camera as I thought it unnecessary and not that helpful for parking.  No previous experience of this option. There seems to be a view that the rear view camera is worth the money and a very useful aid.

Is it really something I should spend money on or not?  Views appreciated

The problem with it is, it takes a bit of time to open and start, sounds really noisy as the cover opens and the camera emerges and can go wrong as shown by a few posts. I still think it is a gimmick, though quite cheap to factory order. So, why not.

But still worth having reversing sensors in case the camera malfunctions.

Did not realise that. You are a better driver than me when reversing as is everyone else. My rear bumper history proves it!
I also find the front sensors very useful.
The camera is a great value option when factory ordered.
Are you going to retro-fit one to this car?
One important consideration is, that if you do prang a rear bumper with parking sensors, it costs much more to fix as the sensors have to be removed before painting. Without them, the bumper can, at most times, be painted in situ.
Who is this R32.?

Not sure how many you have experienced but my experience is completely different. So without being accused of jumping on you,  I totally disagree. Opens the second it goes into reverse, the noise is the same as someone lifting the handle to open the boot (better than the sound of hearing the bumper grate along a wall) and I've never had any problems with mine.  My only gripe would be it tends to mist up in certain weather conditions but still very usable.

I can reverse to literally within a couple of centimetres of the car behind me safely knowing I won't hit it.

Would I buy another car with that option? It would be the first option I would look at.

Good to know. I think as a second or first (for many) line of rear bumper defence it is important. One can never be too careful with one's rear. I should know.
It is excellent value when factory fitted.

.....'better than the sound of hearing the bumper grate along a wall'

The reason I didn't good for the rear camera in the first place is that I opted for the DAB radio receiver and you cannot have these in conjunction with each other.  I thought the parking sensors a good compromise to keep the DAB.  Any thoughts?

Its really each to their own. Those with the cameras will probably say theirs is better likewise those with the sensors will say theirs are better.

I'm of the opinion that if it helps in safety then its definitely worthwhile. I'm sure someone will be along that has both.

As for DAB, analogue isn't due to be switched off any time soon so it didn't bother me not having it. Plus I wanted the camera. I also knew I would upgrade to the RNS510 sat nav system which can't have DAB so it would have been a waste of money for me.
