Title: Budget Mk2 GTI 8v....which seems to be out of control!
Post by: Andy P on 09 January 2011, 19:09
I bought this puppy back in April and the progress has been slow but steady.

Spec as follows.

1989 MK2 8V GTI
30k 2.0 8v with TSR 'Pack A' head and cam
Full Jetex system
Piper Vernier pulley
Pipercross panel filter
Lowered 40mm on????
EBC green stuff pads, grooved disks and braided hoses.

15x7 BBS RZs.

This is how i bought it

In the past 6 months ive had some minor bodywork done, fitted a 2 lamp grill with chrome badge and more recently fitted a new heater matrix....what a pain in the ass!

The wheels have been fully refurbed in silver, acid dipped....the lot! I also managed to get some BBS centre caps which looks a sh!t load better than the VW stickers

I managed to sort a tidy interior and yesterday i recieved some mint door cards. Some joker painted the current ones gloss black.

When i bought it the timing was WELL out. Now having the vernier fitted it produces a healthy 135bhp and 145lb/ft of torque. Quite a fun drive!

This was supposed to be a cheap "runaround" to chuck my board in and the dog and not worry about where i park it etc, its not anymore

Now before xmas i bought a set of BBS RM's, 15x8J. They were described with light kerbing but having mint centres. What i got was different.

Poorly wrapped and covered in CV boot grease and crap. I was gutted. So i spent an hour giving them a good clean to see the damage. Most of the rims are kerbed all over, but i think i can save them, but the centres are heavily corroded and will need repainting. So im in two minds whether to send them back or ask for some money off.  :undecided:

So i put them on the mk2 to see if they drove straight and they do.

But looking like that i think i will have to sacrifice some skin on my fingers and refurb them

Also i have fitted new amber side reps and indicators, OEM freshness  :smug: :smug:

Cool site by the way

Good work.  I want your wheels!

every time i look at a big bumber 3 door i regret having a small bumper 5 door!

looks good! with regard the wheels it all depends on how much you paid for them, a GOOD set goes for £800+ whilst a set thats been newly refurb and mint goes for £1000+!

Small bumper more doors are cool. More retro.

Well I only paid £600 with tyres, albeit 2 of them are no good. But they were described differently. I think I will keep them. Put the hard work in and they will come up nicely. But it suits the rz's nicely too :)

Yep no rot on it at all, so far  they are plastic handles  already on it when I bought it. I thought about fitting mk3 handles, it would be a nice little touch.

Rob have you done any archwork on your mk2?

In summer maybe, but not at the moment!

I'm an obsessed bbs hunter and I haven't seen a mint set go for more than £800 for months now. There is a very mint set on edition38 15x8 with tyres and freshly done, were £900 now £700!!

Sweet car mate!! Love the RM's!

Cheers

Got a price earlier for the centres to be powdercoated silver. £25 a wheel. Chuffed with that. Hopefully i can polish the centres up well enough myself, then try to rebuild them

Little bit of an update. Had the mot last month, flew through!  :)

I picked up some winters yesterday, Renault Clio ph1 turbines. But they are pretty beat up and are in need for a refurb. For the time being i have just touched the chips in
I was going to repaint them silver but i quite like them in black

The dog checking the surf in this one  B)

I gave it a good clean today, SRP, Ultra Deep shine then HD wax is about as far as i go with detailing. Crap photos to show off the depth of the shine but i passed a 10' plate Lambo earlier and the Mk2 looked better

Next step, Im having a go at re-texturing the bumpers and then some coilovers  :D

Pic quality really doesnt do the car justice!!

That looks tuff with them wheels I reakon spaced out abit would finish them off.Lovely motor ive been eyeing an 8v up the same as this £1700 but very clean.

Post by: SoundillusioN on 22 February 2011, 13:23
Wheels look great, I'd refurb them in black or a dark grey as they work well with your car like that I think.... How do you go about retexturing a bumber?
Title: Re: Budget Mk2 GTI 8v....which seems to be out of control!
Post by: Andy P on 22 February 2011, 17:51
You can get this paint from upol. They do a kit so you can retexture your bumper then spray over the top for a colour match.

I think I'll refurb them in satin black in the summer when the rm's are on. And £1700 for a clean isn't bad money ;)
Title: Re: Budget Mk2 GTI 8v....which seems to be out of control!
Post by: Mr Blue on 22 February 2011, 18:11
I know a trick with re-texturing bumpers but it involves heat and compressed air

MK2 looks wiked Andy. I actualy prefer the RZ's than the RM's. Either way still looks good
Title: Re: Budget Mk2 GTI 8v....which seems to be out of control!
Post by: Andy P on 22 February 2011, 18:30
I liked the rz's too but I've always wanted some rm's. I've got to own some silly wide rims at some point :)

The rear bumper has been painted black on the textured part and the front has a scuff on it. Mr Blue is your car indoors at UD?

Bit of an update.

I've collected the lips from the metal polisher and he's done a spanking job! Nice chap too.

Bumpers are retextured, coilovers fitted, mid way through the gear linkage rebuild, just waiting on the alignment tool!

Started cleaning the sh!t in the from the engine bay, wax oil covered in lots of grime....nice. Also will need to treat some surface rust at the same time. Wheels are booked in for powder coating this weekend, it's all going in the right direction ;)

Last night i fitted a lamp lamp grill with fresh pinstripe

I'll raid the breakers next weekend for a pair of 8V's rear i think to match the fronts. Then externally i think its nearly there, bar that silly exhaust  :undecided:

A couple of pics from this years RTTS that some people took

Some really nice cars there this year, and some crap which is pretty standard RTTS

Ive got a momo team 280 to go on (just to be different )

Looking into bike carbs over the winter and fitting a 16v system to lose the twin DTM. Also looking to refurb the turbines soon but not sure what colour to do them in?
