Title: VW Sharan
Post by: Deano2711 on 08 January 2011, 20:29
Going to look at one tomorrow with the Father In Law. 2.0 Petrol model on a 1999 Plate. What things should I be looking out for on one of these. I am aware of the obvious things like headgasket etc. But just wandering if anyone had any ideas on usual faults with these.       Cheers

Think my mrs might be getting one of these soon mate! (yes, I am aware that 7 seats is possibly overkill for one baby    ) Let us know how you get on, I dont know much about em, wouldnt mind getting a vr6 one!

I know that the seat brackets wear easy and brake. Check that they can fold down and brackets are in good condition. Usally they are not bad cars it is the insides that suffer as people usally buy them when they have lots of kids to run around and we all know what kids are like
A 2.0ltr wouldnt be my 1st choice, why have you decided to go for that one, sorry your farther in law? I would have looked for a diesel, a lot stronger and eco. I think a 2ltr will be very thristy as it is a heavy car. Air con is know to have faults so check that it is fully working.

All i would say is really go through the service history with a comb before you part with any money. Still would have looked for a diesel, what sort of budget has he got?

Not really set a budget Mate. Ony saw this advertised locally today and at a decent price. It's a 99 plate, 91,000 on the clock and clean inside and out and advertised at 750 ono. It was a chuck up between this and a Chrysler Voyager and I know a bit about VW's and bugger all about Chrysler's so seems the obvious choice really. Petrol engine not much of a problem as it's only a runaround for the Father In Law and something to go on holiday in once a year.

Hi Dean Ive got 2 seat alhambras which are the same cars as the vw sharan just a different badge.Ive got a 2.0l auto 1998 s plate auto and ive just bought a 1998 s plate tdi manual version in a nice monza blue   .Not sure on what year your buying but the early ones mk1s come with the ADD or ADY engine code think it is and its the same as a 8v gti mk3 engine which is good but they drink fuel big time mate more than a VR6 well in auto anyway.Im gonna sell my 2.0l auto one as ive got  the deisel now which is the better model to buy imo. There very well eqquiped but just check everythings working windows, air con and check the very rear seats as alot of the cars I looked at the headrests were ripped dont know why lol.Another common problem is the wiper mechanisem open the bonnet have a look on the drivers side and turn the wipers on and check theres no rubber bands on the moving parts as people use to hold it togeather.Check for sill damage as like the mk3 gimps jack up on them and some can be pretty bad.I seen a few cars where owners had unplugged the climate control pump as they get noisey its just above the alternator so look out for any plugs unplugged.I looked around at alot and finally found a decent deisel so the petrol ones going now   ive got 4 kids and if you get a decent one there really good cars and great value for money good luck in finding one

Cheers for the advise Blu....great help Mate will check all those parts out. That VR6 badboy looks wicked and if it was for me that would be the choice. Hopefully with it being the 99 model then it will end up being the 8v GTI engine which I now anyway. Will update this thread tomorrow.

Avoid it ?? I personally like it think it looks pretty cool for a moms taxi
No worries Dean there very good value for money but I did look at about 5 before I found a decent one I did find that the older ones like P plates and R plates just seem to be better looked after than the slightly newer ones dont know why but took me a while to find a decent S plate as my wife has a private plate so it had to be S plate and above

Dean it is the vag engine (same as a mk4), the Ford was not available with the 2.0.

Make sure all the electrics work including air con and heater motor.

Most parts are Ford so cheap on spares.

Do you 100% need a 7 seater.

So is my engine in my mk3 the same as a mk4?

Nope, yours is a non crossflow head, mk4, Beetle and sharan's have the crossflow lump.

Same power I believe.

My alhambra 2.0l which im gonna ditch cause its way to heavy on fuel is engine code ADY which is the same engine as my own car.The mk1 sharan also shares the ADY engine in the mk1 I take it the mk2 has the mk4 engine then?

Get a Derv! They're bad enough on fuel, the petrol ones are even worse!   Glad I listened to common sense (and Chuff) and got the derv and not the 1.8T or VR6 which I reallllllly wanted

I get, if I'm lucky, 36mpg on my daily run to work which is mostly A roads.

They're BIG slow cars that drink fuel.

If they do get a derv Sharan/Alhambra/Galaxy make sure the Aux Heater is working!!!
It's located under the rear passenger side, looks like a scooter's exhaust has been bolted underneath, the temp has to be -10C outside for it to fire up. If it's not working, it could just be a glow plug in the aux heater & reset the 'Flame Out' with VAGCOM, or electrical, fuel pump, fuel line, temp sensor...  :lipsrsealed: They might want to go for a Galaxy Ghia... heated front screen in winter   Also make sure that works too before buying...

Most parts are Ford so cheap on spares.

Parts are VW and are cheaper at VW/SEAT in most cases, Ford have to buy their parts from VAG, and so add a bit more on.

Check the manifold to the blocks on some they tend to blow due to heat and metal expansion on diesel models.
1.9 is really good on fuel as stated they are heavy, but did get a motor bike in the back of one!

Boss's sister having a 2.3 Galaxy and dad having a 3.3 Chrysler,

haters gone hate but I'd honestly go for the Merc Engined 2.8CRD Chrysler Voyager.

Reliable (not really had any trouble with ours, waterpump and fan relay) and so comfy it's untrue. Also has a bit of poke if you want it.

The Chrysler is probably a nice motor but alot depends on what you want to spend if you find a decent Sharan,Alhambra or Galaxy for a grand their really good value

Chrysler Voyager.

In your opinion maybe.

So comfortable, so nippy for something that big, so well built until you get past the front seats, then it's just mank. The dash and doors at the front are solid, back for some reason not so much.

Got a 1997. Still passes MOT's and is such a lovely car to be in in a journey.

Don't knock it 'til you've lived with one. Such a cruiser.

Ive got a 1999 seat Alhambra 1.9tdi which ive been doing up for my mrs to use when I bought the car I only had one key which isnt a remote one and to gain access I have to put the key in the door.My other Alambra which is the same car just a petrol has the remote to access the doors.Anyway Ive bought the remote key with the transponder inbuilt etc which ive pictured below im just hoping it can be programed to open the doors on my tdi or is it not possible I know its not a sharan but its exactlly the same car just different badge with the vw engine etc.

The process for the Sharan/Alhambra/Galaxy are the same.

Does it look the same as the original key? A '99 is a MK1, so unless late MK1's had the same fobs as MK2's it won't work with that one. That looks like my key and I have a MK2  :undecided:

Having had the mis-fortune to drive my brother's 07 Sharan and a couple of other POS Sharalaxambras I can thoroughly (sorry Jay) slate these bloody things.

They're way too narrow and high up.

Get a T4 or T5 Caravelle instead - now that's a proper people carrier.  The T5s are especially awesome, as the middle row of seats can be rotated to face the rears and they have four ISOFix mounts in the back.

No worries fella, when I got my Galaxy the remote c/l didn't work, followed the guide and had it working in 2 shakes of a lamb tail

There are loads of other guides on that site too btw It's like the GGTI for Shalaxies

Each to their own and all that  sod the bench seats, proper seats all round with arm rests FTW and the El Capitano's chair for moi  , it's all just extra head room with the height of the car

and the missus would let me get a T anyway, said they look too much like vans
