Title: rota cup wheels help
Post by: stainesy on 07 January 2011, 20:54
hi all

am buying some new wheels next week and have a few in mind what to get but the ones i like the most are wheels made by rota called cups.
problem is all the sites i see them for sale on dont say if they come in 5 stud and all the pics on the sites show a 4 stud wheel.

anybody no if they come in 5 stud?

or does anybody no a website i can get a set of deep dish wheels with tyres for £700 or under?

also mk3 golf gti stud pattern is 5x100 aint it?

doubt youll get rota cups in 5x100 as they are jap wheels so will make 4x100 and 5x114.3.

for 700 quid you could get a decent set of 2nd hand wheels

Lenso =  :sick:

Mate bought a set and they were flaking after 6months.

Look for steffan BCW's or look on wheel whores. £700 would buy you some fairly hugely banded steel wheels too. When I had my mk3 I was going to fit 16in banded steels but never got round to it. Could send you details if you like?
Title: Re: rota cup wheels help
Post by: stainesy on 10 January 2011, 17:20
Yeah I would love to get some good banded steels and polish them. But all the banded steel sites I find online give prices for banding wheels and can not find ready made sets for sale

Similar to Lenso from what I heard, haven't seen a set personally to confirm. They do look nice and are cheap but they do fall into that trap of being fake splits. Depends on how much of a hurry you are but if I had 700 gold coins burning a hole in my pocket I'd be scanning the classifieds and obscure websites trying to find something tasty. Or as I previously suggested I'd fit banded steels, plus you don't cry if you kerb them. Search ebay.de and ebay.nl for alufelgen

Agree they probably wouldn't look right on a mk3. Can't go wrong with a classic mesh.

I thought there was R10 or Turbo's in 5x100.

I have heard of a company local to me that will fill and redrill alloys. Possibly widen OEM ones too but it's still early doors regarding that

Well will be spunking me money on new wheels this sterday and have decided to go for some lenso bsx in silver. I no some say they are bad quality but my car is garaged when ever not in use and polished every week so hoping they will last.
As I got £700 to spend but now also want a new drivers side side skirt, clear wing indicators, flywheel cover and a few other bits ready for santapod in aprill.

Ok ordered and payed deposit for my new wheels today.
Lenso bsx in silver.
The bloke I spoke to was also a mk3 golf bloke with a very low mk3.
He sugested I get et20 ofset or something like that so they wheels stick out for a good stance.
Will be going to get wheels tuesday.
Gona have to rais my coilys up abit tho so the wheels can stick out.

you may need to roll the arches. Consider that OEM is around et42 you order et20 and chances are it's a wider wheel so yeah you may have tyre to arch issues.

oh right yeah well im going for the wide wheel look and have coily so can adjust the hight and was planning on removing the inner front wheel arches.

if need be i will get my heat gun out and my panel beatin hammer and roll the front arches myself.

Not a great idea to remove the inner arches complete, try and trim them down.
Title: Re: rota cup wheels help
Post by: Neo Badness on 22 January 2011, 22:05
If you're going to roll your arches please research it and do a decent job.
I'm just sensitive about it after previous owners have "had a go", on cars I've bought.

As said removing the inner arches complete perhaps not the best course of action.

All you need is a sharp blade and a steady hand.

Possibly adult supervision + packet of Mr Men plasters.
Title: Re: rota cup wheels help
Post by: stainesy on 23 January 2011, 15:16
funny you should say that as i have just rolled my arches and trimmed the inner wings.
i trimmed the inner wing in the middle between the 2 fastening bolts so the rest is still in place nicely. did a good job if i do say so myself.
also then rolled the arch be heating the paint with a heat gun then graduly went along it with rubber mallet till it was all the same and nice and flat.

just gota do the rear now.

are the rears double skinned?
or is it just the same as the fronts?

Rear arches are double skinned, should be able to fold inner lip up.
Make sure it is proper clean though and sealed otherwise crap will get in there causeing it to rust.
You will also need to trim your plastic arch trim on the inside too, but a powerfile makes this job a doddle.
Title: Re: rota cup wheels help
Post by: stainesy on 26 January 2011, 12:59
Cheers mate yeah i trimmed the arch extension on front wile they was on car with a steady hand and nearly lost a finger a few times. Lol.
Even tho i heated front arches i still had paint feel so am going to primer and seal them when i do the rears.
