Hi all. ive got a very tidy mk3 8v gti that I bought with a future project in mind. im kinda new to all this modding malarkey, the last thing i modded was my mk1 16v gti by putting 2 x twin weber 45's, 4 into 1 manifold, 3 1/2 " exhaust, etc etc. As you see all 'bolt on ' items and that was 15 years ago. Now having more time and money I want to go further and build a ' BAD ASS FOTHER MUCKER ' engine from the ground up. Not being mechanical this will be my first build but i dont want it to be the usual ie VR6 or standard VW. My Bro suggested going the skoda route, someone else said Porsche..
I plan to start this build in the 3 months or so.
ANY GOOD TIPS GUYS!!
-
Hmmmm.s4 engine? Then tweak it all out.
Liam
-
something like a 6.0l V12 hmmmmm......... just abit of modding and your there. :)
-
ANY GOOD TIPS GUYS!!
Yep sell it and buy something quicker or fit a 1.8t if your heart is really set on keeping it.
Fitting carbs is a backward step.
-
@Wayne....
Not fitting carbs dude!!!! Read the post fully and you will see I want to build a non standard engine!! KRO
-
LOL tut tut tut Wayne not reading the whole post!!
To be honest mate if you're thinking to do something out of the norm then you're going to "need" to be mechanically minded
check out the post in vw related about the Mk1 R32 Twin Turbo and see all what they went through and how they put it all together!
To do sonmething similar or on that scale you will most DEFINITLY need to be mechanically minded :(
i think the option of the 1.8T or R32 lump would be the best since alot of people have done them and could provide tonnes of help and guidance! not to mention the fact of the tuning capabilities of both engines ;)
Good luck with your choice!
Regards, Jon
-
Cheers for the advice Jon. Allbeit me not being a mechanic I do have a good mechanic mate who's in on the build. Although all advice off you fellas online will be much obliged!
R32 Lump very appealing i have to say...
-
Somethig not VAG - maybe try a jap lump like an integra?
That would annoy a lot of people lol.

Your still missing the point, a fully worked over 8v will still be behind the power you could get out of a 1.8t, the conversion is popular and once you have the engine installed it is very easy to get more power.
You say non standard engine, again what is their available, you have a 2.0 now and even with a rebore, big valve head and many more mods you will be out of pocket much more than a 1.8t, little or no point in fitting a 16v or VR6 and the R32 will be a major ball ache.
LOL tut tut tut Wayne not reading the whole post!!
I have read the whole post, lets be honest the I want to make my 8v quicker gets asked every week.

Custom mounts, driveshafts, wiring hassles the list goes on and on.

At the end of the day mate all your limited to is the size of your wallet and imagination.

At the end of the day mate all your limited to is the size of your wallet and imagination.
So the real question is then, how much do you want to spend on this project and do you really really want to do it to this car?
-
Spot on Archie. Wayne I appreciate what your saying mate but I will be removing the 8v lump for sure I'm just undecided as to what lump I'm goin to replace it with. I thought VR6 to start but now I'm thinking something different. Would love to see a V8 transplant but being honest don't think that will happen. Been inspired by dubsport twin engine ' UFO' wanna do something different!

So you are willing to chuck a lot of money at this then?
-
Illusion I'm prepared to spend money yes. I'm not naive enough to think I can do it on a grand if that's what you mean bud??

I wasn't having a dig, just curious to get an idea of how far you are willing to go and how much.... V8 would be epic but you would need to do a RWD conversion to make it fit..... Hmm a V8 RWD mk3..…
do it!
-
Illusion does sound jizz fest good don't it! V8 RWD hmmm let's investigate!!!!

This might interest you then, it's a mk2 Rallye V8 twin turbo! But it's good enough to give you an idea of what the crack would be... The best bit is its all vag pretty much.. The engine is a V8 from an Audi A6.

SAAB turbo or if ya really want to ruffle some feathers dare i say it a red top out a........................................................vauxhall , there i said it.

One thingto remember is that major changes to the shell will result in issues with the DVLA and getting the car back on the road.
Rules have changed and it is much harder now.

R36 FTW!!!

-
Tdi for the win like mine soon to be circa 250 bhp
-
Now there's some seriously badass engine conversions!
-
Think a civic type r engine would suite a mk3, never seen it done though.
-
Small and powerful is the way forward I think (I don't like this though), so a 1.4 TSI engine would be pretty cool
-
There is a guy who inserted a 2.6l 380bhp Powertec V8 in the front of a spaceframed racing Mini and, via the use of an old touring car gearbox, retained the FWD layout. Now I know that I'm probably well into the realms of fantasy here but in theory, if it'll fit in a Mini, it'll fit in a Golf...
S.M.
-
1.4 tsi
Audi S2 turbo
VW t4 2.5 tdi
These would be the ones I'd do.
I'd go synchro too.
-
2ZJ or whatever the Supra engine code is! Would be banter! Twin turbo madness=Yum
-
Four Veyron engines, one for each wheel.
-
i would quite like to do a MK4 GT TDI 150
Dan

That'd be a good swap.
Nice with the 6 speed box too.
-
Lol its all very well 4WD, RWD, non-vag engines, but its not easy and its expensive!
V8 in a Mk3 would be a difficult task!! Not to mention the engine price (would need to be a S4 or even an RS4 V8 to be worth while, lets be honest).
A 1.8t to do yourself is £2.5k, if not more. That's not a difficult conversion really, as there isn't much custom stuff at all (nothing difficult anyway) plus there is lots of help and advice out there. If you got the skills to cut the car up and get a 4WD setup in working correctly and money to buy the setup along with a engine, then go for it. If your good with wiring, etc, then maybe a TSFI engine would be cool.
Non-vag is stupid in a vag car and ftmfl :D
A budget would be nice. Less than 5k? 10k? 20k?
-
300zx fairlady lump.
Might not fit though.
-
All this talk of non vag engines is just plain silly.
-
if your gonna put a non standard vag engine just go for a sr20det or ca18det if you can fit it in a micra! itll fit in a golf without too much mider
-
Cut a hole in the footwell and do a Fred Flintstone conversion

As i've said before...
R36..... or.... STFU and GTFO!!!
-
All this talk of non vag engines is just plain silly.
Why?
-
All this talk of non vag engines is just plain silly.
Why?
Because you are looking at A) major work and B) a right ballache to get it finished and on the road.
Major changes to the shell means it is not easy to get the car back on the road.
-
Thanks for your input fellas. Perhaps I should stick to a VR6 convo as originally thought especially for my first attempt. So saying that any recommendations on sourcing a decent VR6 lump ??? 2.9 corrado prefferred

Yep that would make the most sense with the way s/h values are at the moment.

Too funny.
Did you pick up Golf+ this month? It had a big spread on engine conversions in there - 1.8T, R32, 2.0TFSI etc. Might help you with your decision.

Lets be honest for a second or 2, to get a 2.0 TSFI in and working is beyond a diy job plus you need to find a doner car and I would suspect by the time it is finished you will have knocked a hole in £5k +

TSFS beyond a DIY job, nope. QPENG are making a Plug and play loom for the mk1,2 and 3

Guess so but I am not keen on qpeng, removes too many safety features for me.
-
What you get for the money from QPeng is pretty poor, an ECU with 90% of the standard safty features plus a loom you have to supply them with gets a few wires spliced in for a grand. No thanks!
Get yourself a standard ecu and loom from a 1.8t and mod it yourself (guides are around, theres a good one on ClubGTi with pics and easy to follow instructions) or there are people on here who can mod it for you for around 300, if you wanted it mapped aswell as long as you get it cheaper than 700 you are cheaper or equal to QPeng plus you have a much better management system and none of the hassle that comes with running custom management (like garages not wanting to touch you with a barge pole etc)

I agree to a point, hence why I'm using standard management with Stu's car. But I don't see the big problem with QPeng, its fine to use and I don't think people should slate it, its a quality bit of kit and they try to help with any problems you have.
Given, its expensive and that's the mostly the reason why we and many other's now choose to run the standard ECU and the fact its easier with all the help available too.
Alex :)
-
I'm not slagging off QPeng at all I've not heard of too many problems and certainly not any more than people who run other managements, and they are pretty helpfull with any issues you have. Just think its not worth near £1000 :)

bi-turbo vr6!!! now thats the way 4wrd!

Would not work on a VR as you only have one bank and manifold.

In a way yes but it is still not a bi turbo in the true sense.
-
Anyway mate. Golf + had loads of info on engine swaps this month. Think it was part 2 too, so if you can get hold of last months issue it might have other options as well as the modern lumps.
-
1.8t is the easiest and most cost efficient way to get better performance out of a mk3 :)

+1
Twin turbo setup would work, but not a proper bi-turbo setup.
And yes Dan, I agree with you there bud, QPeng is a bit expensive. I expect him to drop the price a little soon as more people are running standard ECU as its not too hard and there is lots of help/advice. Also with the 2.0 TFSI engine starting to appear now, he's going to want to push that and move the 1.8t aside.
-
Thanks for all you input. I have managed to source a '51' 1.8t gti lump and box + other goodies for £300... now the fun starts of buying all the sexy bits...........:)

Cheers sharky don't worry there will be lots of pics!!
Luckily I have a mate with a mate who VW bonkers G40 Polo being among his stock. RESULT

I also bought a mint 8v with heated leather, ac, 25,000 etc. I'm doing a r32 conversion. I'm giving myself £10,000 and 3/5 years to do it lol that's all body mods too, but that price ain't including the cost of the wheels as they are coming soon
